RMweb Premium Andy Hayter Posted August 19, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 19, 2017 I like the way this is coming together. For me every layout needs to have a history which explains what it is and why it is.
kirtleypete
You have to be flexible and prepared to alter things as new information surfaces, you end up with a better layout after all. Here are some pictures of the finished model of the bridge and buildings: The 141R is a big engine, but it's dwarfed by the buildings which is just what I wanted to happen. kirtleypete
Either everyone on RM Web is very polite, or no none has noticed my stupid mistake! This is our layout plan..... Now have a look at the pictures of the buildings above....I've built the model backwards! The only thing we can do is build the layout the other way round, like this: It's a good thing we hadn't begun track laying!Peter Edited August 19, 2017 by kirtleypete
JAMO
Sorry Peter but I haven't seen the "mirror effect". But you can turn for 180° the buildings to obtain the good way. You can put the "gabarit réduit" signal on a post near the "tunnel". And write "EVITER LA FUMEE" on the wall.
kirtleypete
We're going to built the layout the other way round Jackie, we haven't started work yet. Turning the buildings won't work, the gateway would be at the front. Peter
kirtleypete
I have finally been able to build the first baseboard and lay some track so that the road bridge can be stuck in place. The track is Peco flat bottomed which I haven't used before. I have made the baseboard surface from 6mm play to try and keep it as light as possible, but whether it will work remains to be seen. The backscenes are 9mm to keep them straight. I've used three Lenz buffer stops because I'd got them; they can be replaced with something more French in due course. The white circle is where the loco oiling apparatus will be. Peter
kirtleypete
This baseboard is about finished now apart from the apparatus for oiling the 141R's which is on the way from France. The small diesel pump is for the yard shunter, a former DB V36 diesel. I need to spray the retaining wall with Dullcote to kill the shine. I've cut away the horrible great lump of plastic that Peco mould around the tie bar so the point looks far better. Peter

In the theatre, at least in the west, The hero(ine) normally enters stage right (so from the left from the audience's point of view) and that's what your locos will now do. Perhaps you instinctively sensed that when you built the street. This is looking good and I'm really looking forward to seeing this layout. kirtleypete
I've added the point lever; there is an article in the latest Loco Review that came out at just the right time. Peter
kirtleypete
I need to do something about that point lever; as it is you can't move the blades. Things have progressed though, with the next baseboard built plus a small intermediate one because the track wouldn't fit! I've added two oil tanks (from Made in Manchester Models), and thankfully the 141R does squeeze under the oiling apparatus. The turntable is on order from Real Modell in Germany but it won't be ready until December, so we'll start work on the other end of the layout in the meantime. The 2' long board enables the tracks to pass the turntable without unrealistic curves. It's tight, but the oil burning 141R does fit. The oil tanks were ready made, all I've done is spray them with Dullcote to kill the shine. They would have been pretty new so I haven't weathered them. Added later: As soon as John saw these pictures, as an ex fireman he know there was more to be done; the tanks needs a low wall around them to contain any spillages, and the area inside the wall needs to be gravel, not grass. That's a job for tomorrow, Peter Edited October 6, 2017 by kirtleypete
kirtleypete
Hopefully the tanks look better - and safer - now! They are probably too close to the buildings, but there is nowhere else that we have space for them. Peter

kirtleypete
I've ballasted the track on the second baseboard; next we are going to begin work at the far end and work towards the turntable from both directions. The Chateau on the backscene is from the real Eu; I wanted at least one building from the real place. The problem is that when you search for pictures of Eu you get a lot of images of Jean Claude Junker which isn't a lot of use! Peter
kirtleypete
I've finished the backscenes along this section now and it's beginning to look like we want it to. The 141P is the recent MTH model and is superb. The weathering was done with brushes and Railmatch enamels. Peter
kirtleypete
I've taken some pictures with more engines on the layout to give an impression of how it should look when it's finished. Peter
Focalplane
Peter I am really impressed by your layout, it is coming along nicely. The Mikados are delightful locomotives and I am pleased to know your positive opinion of MTH - I am not impressed with their LMS coaches (nearly all first class!) My local model shop in Bessan (not exactly local, it is an hour's drive on A9) has absolutely no Gauge O in stock, it's all HO, and when I asked if there are any "Echelle Zero" clubs in the area, the owner just laughed! Best wishes, Paul
kirtleypete
0 gauge does seem to be very much a minority interest in France Paul - I've joined the Cercle du Zero and the forum is interesting but much less lively than those over here. The latest MTH loco's are superb, really top class models and the French coaches are pretty good when you consider that they're only £80 each. To be blunt, without MTH I couldn't afford to model the SNCF. Sadly though their 2018 catalogue doesn't include anything new at all for European modellers. bbishop
Peter, I think that Piers Milne has been in contact with you! I'm planning Höchstädt 2, for which I will need quite a lot of track. I will use Lenz points and have a reasonable amount of plain Lenz track to fill in around the points. But I don't have enough track for all the layout and would appreciate your opinion whether Peco flat bottom is sufficiently similar. I really don't want to pay €18 per metre! Peter Hello Peter, I was reading Voie Libre (which reviews your Mers-les-Bains layout) and noticed a brief review of your two new books on French narrow gauge networks: one about the Saone et Loire and the other about the Beaujolais. Do either of them cover the "Tacot" line from Autun to Chateau-Chinon?
kirtleypete
Hi Bill, yes, I'd use the Peco track, it looks fine. I must the be the only person who hasn't yet got his copy of Voie Libre Ian! The Chateau Chinon line is included in the Saone et Loire book, it's one of my favourites. It's a shame there are so few pictures of the tramway at Chateau Chinon station. Peter
kirtleypete
We have put up the last two baseboards in order to be able to work on the other end of the layout while we wait for the turntable to arrive. Happily everything we had planned on paper is going to fit. Using a spray can to mark out the track plan is a quick and easy way to picture how it is going to look. The shed won't be full length, but will be long enough to take a 231E Pacific. We also have a new arrival for the shed, a 'Bicyclette'. She's totally out of place, they were all scrapped in the 1940's, but I couldn't resist her and she'll make a lovely shed shunter. 'Mouette' means 'Seagull', perfect for a layout set on the coast. Focalplane
I just received my copy of the Gauge O Guild magazine and ?your article on the 141R makes excellent reading! Plus the photos from out of the box to nicely weathered - the spilled coal looks perfect. Paul

kirtleypete
Our turntable has arrived from Real Modell in Germany. It comes with a paper template which is glued to the baseboards, and then the hole cut out for the well. It also marks to positions of the four fixing bolts. Installing it will have to wait until John can spare some time as it's really a two person job. The table comes fitted with a DCC sound decoder which has the sounds of the table itself plus background such as passing trains, birdsong and a thunder storm! It is operated just like a loco from the hand held controller. Once it is in place we'll be able to finish off all the track laying - all the points are already installed.
