Ian Kirk Southern kits

I certainly hope so, I need a Bulleid Brake third to complete a three-set. Charlie at DC kits has 'a bundle' of Ashby SR kits on his counter, he was able to find one Bulleid brake for me and send it to Oz. Worth a try if you are looking for something specific? However, other than the restaurant car I thought Hornby had pretty much covered the Maunsell stock?

Cheers from Oz,

Peter C.

Y'know, if someone wanted to sell products into a specialist market, you'd think they'd proofread their webpages before making them live. "Bullied" coaches, indeed! Not just once but several times.

Probably autocorrect. It happens to me all the time.

If these do come to fruition then I would buy a few. I've already got some and would like to complete the sets and feel it would be better having coaches match rather than mixing Kirk and Hornby in the same set. The restaurant car would be especially welcome.

On that basis I hope they hoover the ex Ian Rice etched products which Mainly Trains used to sell.

I found that quite a few of those etches were oversized for 4mm scale. The SR lamp irons in particular were massive, and would have been appropriate for S-gauge.

Kirk Bullied coaches were pretty nich. Namely, the 56ft all door sets. Not bad kits at all.

I don't think he he ever made a restaurant vehicle kit.

The Bulleids are 59ft, I have built a set and wouldn't mind doing another.

He did do a Maunsell Restaurant car - I have one I'm in the course of altering into one of the BR conversions. I'd like a few more for other projects I have in mind.

I built two of the Kirk Bulleids, but they used the Maunsell coach profile. I have a third one still to build, but am seriously considering using Comet brass sides instead and rebuilding the other two to match.

I bought quite a few of the Maunsell kits many years ago; once again, I have built some but still have a few unmade ones. The Restaurant car is part-built and is probably the only one i will finish now, seeing as Hornby's Maunsells are far better than anything I can make, much as I enjoy the kit-building experience.

I'm sure there must be a few other modellers around who have unmade Kirk kits still lying around, like me.

Here is a buffet conversion f the Kirk restaurant 1st I made some time ago. Have made several sets of Bulleid 'shortie' coaches using cheap Hornby Maunsels as donors which looked OK. The rebated window sections were very helpful in getting a flush glazed look.

Looking VG Tony. What paint did you use if you don't mind me asking?

Bill Bedford sides are worth a look for both Bulleids and Maunsells. OK so not all Diagrams are available immediately but I have used some BB Maunsell Dining vehicle sides and they are pretty smart.

Duh!!! Only I could get coach lengths wrong. Too much LMS coach building!!!!

Nice restaurant car. I shall keep my eyes open for one of these.

Rare as hen's teeth I realise, but you never know.

I reckon 'we' could get some sides printed as those 3D things are advancing so quickly.

  • 3 weeks later...

The Ian Kirk Southern coach kits (which were with Colin Ashby for many years) seem to have found their way to the Phoenix empire.

https://www.phoenix-paints.co.uk/products/exkirk/exkirkmaunsell

Whether they'll actually reappear is another matter of course.

Oh ye of little faith - there were plenty packaged up a la Kirk style and branded 'Ex-Kirk' Kits on the Phoenix stand at the Southwold show today.

Just wish the same could happen to the ex-Kirk LNER kits...

  • 2 weeks later...

Just to confirm: I emailed Heather at John Dutfield and she confirmed they had the Bulleid 59' Brake and Maunsell Restaurant first in stock at 25GBP each, (plus others, these are what interested me). They have been put aside for me pending my UK visit in September.

Great friendly service,

Cheers from Oz,

Peter C.

If Phoenix are selling the 4mm ones at £25 a pop then it could be worth getting someone to 3D print or Silhouette (spelling?) the Restaurant Car (mentioned earlier before I saw the price) as I think quite a few people would want one ot two of those (me included).

I'm still reasonably happy to do a cut and shut job with Bill Bedford (Mousa Models) Sides and a Hornby donor.

Well, if you're offering  -  how many weeks' pocket money would I need?  Too many, I guess, 'cos I've got to leave enough for my jubblies  .  .  .  .

Just a big word of praise for heather at JD Models. She evn sent me a pic of the Kirks they have. It didn't include the Restaurant but she was going to look at some other stock in the store. How's that for service?

Not sure if it helps, but I have a whole rake of Kirk originals in Teak livery going spare which I'm up for disposing of. And  they have a decent paint job -...
