There were parts of the NCB system at Mountain Ash in South Wales in the 70s where the track was invisible beneath a layer of coal slurry.  It may not have been there at all, and I spoke to a driver with over 25 years experience who had never seen it.  The trains were on the rails at the start and tended to be on the rails at the end, so nobody worried too much.  Another part of the same system was along the ex GWR Pontypool-Aberdare line, and this was, despite having been not looked after for over a decade, beautifully preserved with proper ballast and so on, the best bit of the system.  

 

Some of the more obscure corners of the Cardiff Docks system were a bit rough in those days as well, and it was alleged that you could tell if your 08 was off the road because the ride became smoother...
