I should be going to this exhibition, shifts at work permitting. It has always been a good show, have been most years since I converted from OO to N and with a good selection of inspiring layouts and good food in the restaurant!

I've booked my train tickets to visit the show on the Saturday because I'm not staying locally with friends this year.

I have bought the tickets from Virgin and only then thought of checking Split Ticketing and found I could have saved £14 on the same trains....

Looking forward to seeing the show though!

Thanks for the link. I'm hoping to get there on the Sunday.

Fingers crossed that there is at least one trader selling Redutex roof tile sheets and N/2mm brick embossed plasticard. And that they've still got stock on Sunday.

Good morning Robert,

I, along with four others from the Ivanhoe MRS, will be attending TINGS on the Sunday.  I have purchased advanced tickets to ease entry and have read that you must print them out.  Last year, I just showed the PDF on my phone to the person on the door and there was no problem.  Will this still be the case this year?  I don't want to have to pay for all five people again because I've made a mistake - Got trains to buy you see!

Relating to an afore mentioned post, we've got an O Gauge modeller tagging along with us this year - Maybe another convert?

Looking forward to the show.

Cheers, Andy.

Hello all,

If you're attending TINGS come and say hello to Revolution Trains on stand 16.

We have the first pair of factory-finished 9-car Pendolinos airfreighted in for the show, along with painted samples of our forthcoming transition era Class B tanker in ESSO livery.  There'll also be the chance to examine samples of our Class 92 locomotive and KFA container flats, as well as chat to us about other upcoming models including the Class 320/321 EMU, HOA hopper and IZA Cargowaggon twins.

We will also have stocks of Project Railway Honour 66418 Patriot and to mark our new relationship with Kernow Model Centre, who are going to be distributing the Pendolinos when they arrive from China, we also have limited stocks of their N Gauge exclusive models.

cheers

Ben A.

Well gang, show up and ready to rock... couple of layout to set up but that is it.

This year the site owners have building works affecting back of house area - does not impinge on show except vehicle movements are a complicated. As a result the entrance to carpark link is also a one way road link. The queuing system will be on oneside of way and vehicles on the other . I hope -as it probably fall to me as outdoor gofer to try to marshall folk into prepaid and pay on the day all work ok but it might get a bit congested... Just for one year luckily. The works are for a new project onsite.

I look forward to seeing you over the weekend and hopefully my spending will be wise :locomotive: !!

Any comments, photos, or feedback from the first day?

G.

I suppose that when you have been a few times (which I have) then you know what to expect. There were some decent layouts there. I'm sure others will have their favourites but one that caught my eye was Cottingvale Harbour. It was quite a compact layout with a straightforward track plan but the sweeping curve for the station really gave it a realistic appearance and it was nicely built. See http://www.amodeowebdesign.co.uk/images/cottingvale.jpg

The good news for you is that I saw some Redutex red brick so I'm hopeful that you will find your roof tiles :-)

Went with my mates today and thoroughly enjoyed the day the venue is excellent good parking and the halls airy and catering very good and good prices. The layouts were excellent and I think that Stamford East stood out with well modelled buildings. The large modular layout from Germany was one to spend time looking at the detail and the chaps running it were a pleasure to speak to.The trade stands were very good and I liked the staff behind the shop from Germany the   national costume was a good idea, perhaps some of traders could dress as Befeaters!   Other layouts that stood out.Burnham-on-Sea,Invercally even better in the flesh after seeing it in RM,Kings Park ,St Combs great detail,All in all good day out and I definitely know our gang will be back next year thanks for a good show.

I liked this layout a lot as well; the modelling was extremely neat and as you say the simple track layout is used to good effect.

Hi

Gang - for sake of a word ! Thanks for coming and making a great show. As was expected the Saturday queues were despite getting folk to close up - thanks, the prepaid queue over 150m  and the pay on the day even longer. Bachmann staff fully engauged(sorry) from 10.00 - 14.00 and busy rest of day and Sunday. Dapol stand also doing brisk trade with folk 5 deep most of the day.  Other traders had a good Saturday, Anoraks Anonymous were looking to be at full speed all day. THE N soc Timber carrier wagon based on the KSA snapped by soc members, I got 5 KSA cubes and not that many left- the kits with wheels and trasfers a joy and if you are not a member and model the 1990s these are worth joining in their own right ( Shameless plug !!!)

The Catering crew did more than brisk and again thanks for the comments made on quality, price and portion !

Sunday close at 16.00 saw a good and prompt breakdown and unlike folk from Germany and our own flung corners  I am back home 20.00 with just a sweep of rubbish and shell scheme for the centre staff to finish Monday - next do is a classic car auction so all new fit out.

See you 2018 !! Date 8th and 9th Sept 2018

Cheers and happy modelling in the growing scale :locomotive:  :locomotive:

I hope this'll be taken in the right spirit but, having seen a lot of very nice modelling on show, I was surprised at how often it wasn't displayed to its best effect, with quite a few layouts having either no lighting or indifferent lighting/presentation. Surely it's a given now, after all the books and articles on layout design have shown, not to be reliant on the exhibition venue lighting? Obviously it'll be a problem for the large modular layouts, but some of the smaller ones could well have used a bit more lighting, I felt, to bring out the best of what's on display.

The one "2mm" layout that I spotted seemed to have got it right, with good illumination, presentation and being set at what I'd regard as a good height for viewing (always a contentious one, I accept).

Yes, I agree. There were far too many poorly lit layouts and some without any lighting at all. But then there often are, even on other scales layouts at other exhibitions.

The ambient lighting in the TINGs shed is quite variable (getting darker towards the back) and I ended up having to give up on trying to take some layout photographs late on Sunday. The NEC (Warley show) hall's dull orangey sodium lighting is even worse and there are still layouts there that do not have any form of lighting.

Layout lighting is something that should be considered at the planning stages and incorporated in the design to provide effective and appropriate overall illumination to the whole layout, rather than as an afterthought (once the layout is built) that many appear to have made it. Then the 'add-on' of a couple of spotlights up a pole is just not suitable or sufficient. With N gauge models being small they do need more appropriate lighting to display well and make the most of them, rather than having them in shade, a halls poor dingy dull lighting, or in shadows as the trains run between 'pools' of light where spots have been used. Layout lighting needs to be integral and consistent across the entire modelled scene.

Visiting Tings as a "larger scale" modeller, it struck me that there were no book traders, no tool traders or anyone selling modelling materials (apart from scenics)

There were odd items sprinkled among the boxes of RTR.

I did find some etched brass kits though.

Interesting day out though.

Yep, I did notice that even as an N gauge modeller but maybe because I had some of those items on my shopping list. I did manage to track down one trader selling brick embossed plasticard but was unable to find any Evergreen styrene strip and soft sanding sticks. Apparently there was a tool trader booked but he failed to pre-pay for his stand.
