  1. 1. Should we have a separate Bargain Thread to allow for discussions?

    • Yes, just show me the Bargains! Kindly discuss elsewhere please.

    • Yes, a place of our own where we can discuss / question / moan away to the end of days

    • No, I'm quite happy to clog the thread up with discussion despite polite requests not to!

A proposal (and hopefully a poll if it's worked)

Over in the prototype area of the forum there are two threads:

Prototype Questions & Prototype Discussions (No Questions)

Since being introduced, these two threads have lived side by side quite happily, people ask questions and hopefully people come up with the suitable answers or people, post about a topic and interested parties weigh in with their tuppence-worth of ideas, experiences / knowledge. Brill!

Why not introduce something similar for here? If so can we have them as sticky threads please?

Bargain Posts: simply an area for the Bargainistas to post a Bargain they have found to help everyone's hard earned stretch just that little bit further. No discussions or questions, plain & simple, ooh look a bargain buy.

Bargain Discussions: seen something you don't agree with or want to let everyone know your local WH Smith's / Modelzone / Lidl etc doesn't stock it or has it cheaper - post here with a link to the original Bargain post and let the Discussionists do their thing without hinderance or annoying the Bargainistas.

Just a thought, trying to keep everyone happy on this great forum.

I'm going to report this post myself so that the Mods & Andy will see it and they can make the decision.

Thanks for reading and thanks to those who have hopefully voted.

I can see the merits of this; have one topic as 'Bargain alerts - links only and no discussion' and one as 'Bargain discussions - not for alerts'. If there were any posts in the former which breach the intent they can be reported and removed.

What about the totally unhelful posts along the lines of "ABCRail had the Bachby ex-LT Class X for £1.00 (RRP £1000.00) - but I got the last one"!!

John Isherwood.

Perhaps rather than removed, moved to the appropriate thread?

They go in the Bargain Alert but you moan about it in the discussion

I'd prefer that there was a detector that sent out a pulse to fry the PC / device of the poster.

Any protests would, of course, go in the Discussion file - once the OP had purchased a new device with which to post !!!

John Isherwood.

So if you see a bargain you post it on one thread.  The if you want to comment on that bargain you have to post that on another thread.....  Seems a daft idea to me.  And the questions are so loaded that the poll is effectively pointless.

The reason is because people have it set so that new posts to the bargains thread generate an alert. They only want to be alerted when a new bargain is posted. Since the forum software can't differentiate between a post about a bargain and the subsequent discussion they end up inundated with alerts they don't want. If they turn it off then they miss all the bargains too. The proposed solution fixes this in that the separate discussion thread won't trigger loads of false bargain alerts.

Unfortunately just checking the bargain thread now and again throughout the day does not always work - some bargains are sold out within minutes of being posted.

So if a bargain appears, I then have to go to another thread to ask a question about it. Not a real problem there. But what happens if someone replies on the questions section, that there's a better deal? Does that post then have to be repeated back on the bargains only thread?

I appreciate that some have notifications for every post and don't like irrelevant posts (which caused the lockdown of the previous thread) , but the only way to ensure full coverage of the two threads and possible "missed" bargain  that are suggested on the questions page is by receiving notifications of the questions thread. So two sets of notifications are now received.

Keep one thread and allow some limited discussion.

I'm not actually going to vote because I do not agree with the wording of the third choice.

A better choice would be "keep one thread but be prepared to be slapped down if you stray too far off topic".

Maybe it needs an automatic weekly reminder on the thread to keep discussion to a minimum?

Cheers,

Mick

Basically yes, keeps the bargain thread clear of clutter.

As for loaded questions, really?

The question is should we have a separate thread for discussions arising from a Bargain post?

Answer Yes or No!

There are three answers - that's not just yes or no.

If it is a two answer poll, then I vote no.

Two answers start with Yes, one starts with No, so basically it is just yes & no, press the no vote if you obviously don't agree.

I appreciate your idea up thread of how the no question should have been worded to "keep one thread but be prepared to be slapped down if you stray too fat off topic" but what happened on the old thread, people just got uppity and on their high horse when they were reminded politely to stay on topic.

For goodness sake, the bargain hunters thread was excellent. If it aint broke, why not leave it as was. john

Because, as has already been stated,

someone broke it/abused it.

It wasn't broke, but some people decided it still needed fixing.....

Maybe we can try again.
