Track Gauges

Hi Guys

I need some help. I am planning to build an irish broad gauge layout in 21mm gauge 4mm scale.

I have a roller gauge and a back to back gauge, but what I don't have is a the tri point curve gauge for 21mm.

I have spoken to a number of people who have built P4 track and they all say that it is a must in getting the right radius and gauge widening on handbuilt curved track.

So as no one appears to make one for 21mm guage, I wonder if anyone can tell me how do I go about making my own and how do you work out the angles and location of the rail location pins on the gauge itself to get it righ?

The Scalefour Society Stores offers a triangular gauge - ref: 190A. If you're not a member of the Society, I'm happy to obtain one for you when I attend Scaleforum. (It'll be an excuse for me to buy a set for myself....)

The pair of outer locations are set at a distance twice that of the track gauge being used, so for 21mm track, 42mm between them. Don't have a 4mm OO/EM/P4 one to hand, but this is a 2mm 2FS one. The distance ratio relationship between the leg positions is the same however whatever the gauge/scale used.

You don't of course put the single leg on the outside of a curve, that way gauge narrowing lay.....

That looks good, yes I will want one, do you know how much it will be, I am not sure what other jigs they do which will help with building track is there list?

£9.50.

The Stores list is only available to Society members, but all you really need to complete your set is a flangeway gauge (0.68mm) which to be honest you can find more cheaply as a spark plug feeler gauge. There is also a "mint" gauge for fine-tuning pointwork, priced at £15.

Ok I will go ahead with both of those and let me know if you have a pay pal account and how much it will cost for the postage and packing.

PM with your details I think is the best way to go forward with this.

given the small subscription fee and the wealth of information on building hand made track , I suggest you join the society, rather then use another members access

I surmise he wants to see how he gets on with 21mm first before going the whole hog and joining the Society.

its 26 quid a year to join , his first point will cost him multiples of that !!!

The big thing missing in 21mm is a check rail gauge , as gauging off the stock rail isnt great

Let him make that decision.

Or adopt neither route: come along to Scaleforum for the day and purchase said items from the Society Stores.  Anyone can do that at any of the Society shows.

It would have the added bonus of being able to speak to some experts and pick up some tips on how to handbuild track.

You are correct about wanting to see how it goes first of all, I have had to cut down on the number of groups I am a member of being between work at present, hopefully when that changes I will consider joining.

As for getting along to Scalefourm no can do this year, as I am off to North Devon. Not so much a holiday but partly to do some much required research and to have a business meeting or two, followed by watching some trains and drinking some beer, life can be so hard at times.

I've got your pair of gauges. PM sent.
