Monroe, oo gauge shunting micro layout with a station

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone.

This is my latest layout, collie lane is nearing completion now so I fancied doing something just for fun.

The name comes from my wife being a big Marilyn Monroe fan and she is going to help me with this layout.

This being my wife's ( Sarah ) first ever experienced building a layout it's going to be fairly simple.

The layout is going to be based on one we found on youtube and Sarah liked the look of it.

It's going to be built on a shelf from b&q and around 3' 6" by 1' excluding a small fiddle stick around 1' 6" long.

My wife will be having a lot of say as to what goes on the layout so it's not going to be accurate and is a fun, fictitious layout.

There will be a run round loop with a siding and a spur for the station, I'm off to b&q soon to buy a shelf.

More soon.

Thanks Alex for your kind words.

Hi Everyone.

Today I am going to build a station platform, this will be the Metcalfe stone platform kit PO235.

I really like the Metcalfe kits as they are easy to build, have good detail and not bad value for money.

I will go to the model shop next time I'm in town to get a point to finish the track work ( hopefully they will have one in ).

More soon.

That railcar looks familiar

steve

It looks good next to the station and runs well too, I got it off a nice bloke on Rmweb ;-)

Been very busy today as my brother in law visited so no modelling done.

Next job I'm going to do is make some buildings, I'm going to York tomorrow so if I have time I will pop in to the model shop there and get a left hand point to finish of the track work.

More soon.

Hi Everyone.

I finally managed to get a point today so I was able to finish the track laying, we went for all new track as this will be my main layout and also to avoid reliability problems.

With the track tested and tested again without any problems I can now move on to ballasting.

Hi Everyone.

Well after a lot of testing and it works great but I'm just not happy with the track plan.

It's the small siding I'm not happy with, I would like it a bit longer but not sure what to do in the space, wether to just leave it or change the plan.

I would like a station and a goods siding that can be run round, any ideas would be greatly appreciated, I did think of putting a small radius point in-between the the two lefts ( replace the short straight ).

I shall see if any one can come up with a solution or ideas.

More soon.

How about this Jerry, providing you can succesfully lift the track, and modify the platform to use the non-curved side?  Basically, it's shortening the left hand end of the line, assuming you use mostly fairly short locos on a layout this size. thus extending the loop section enough to stick in a reasonably long siding to which you could add a goods shed or whatever. If you put an overbridge at the right hand side, both tracks could exit onto the fiddle yard board if required.  Viewing could be from either side of the board, but you might prefer to make it  from the top edge as shown.

Thanks very much for your suggestion Huggy, I have gone for something similar but omitted one point and kept the station where it was.

Hi Everyone.

As mentioned I changed the track plan a bit so I could get a longer siding in.

Here is a photo of the layout as of tonight:

Ballasting is next and I'm going to get the Metcalfe kit po232 goods shed to go on the siding.

Hi Everyone.

The weekend was spent putting together the Metcalfe goods shed kit, I do like these kits.

Here is a photo of it on the layout:

I'm going to make a start on ballasting tomorrow and get some Metcalfe tarmac kits.

Thanks Steve.

Hi Everyone.

I have been busy ballasting and making an embankment, my wife felt a bit daunted by the ballasting but she's going to have a go at the smaller details and try and create some nice cameo scenes, she is more interested in what's going where and smaller details I think.

I will post a photo of latest work tonight.

More soon.

Hi Everyone.

Well today has been a disaster modelling wise.

I built a embankment but I wasn't happy with it so stripped it off, then I ballasted the track and added some grass and that didn't look right so I'm going to just ballast the whole lot.

Not a good day but hopefully tomorrow will be better.

I have days like that too Jerry. Although it's dispiriting at the time, it will be all the better for the extra effort that went in.

Good to hear you've had a better modelling day Jerry, I'm pleased for you. It looks excellent and I'm sure will be an enjoyable layout to shunt.

Thanks Booking Hall, it's fun to operate and does keep you entertained.

Jerry,

This is coming along really nicely now. Pleased to see that you've left plenty of room for scenic development and not tried to cram in too much track.

regards

Bill

Thanks Bill,

I tried to give a sense of realism track plan wise and not cram loads of track in also I wanted a small depiction of a town with some houses and shops etc.

Hi Everyone.

I have done a small bit of ballasting today, here is a photo:post-9096-0-64491100-1507309936_thumb.jpg

Progress was stopped by the arrival of this:

post-9096-0-64053000-1507310009_thumb.jpg

He is the newest member of the house, he needed a home and we couldn't resist, meet Snoopy, our cat.

It didn't take him long to settle in but he's banned from the railway room.

Hi Everyone.

I bought the Metcalfe tarmac sheets yesterday and my wife is going to have a go at cutting and sticking them down, we got these for simplicity, if I were building the layout on my own I would have tried wet and dry sandpaper but the Metcalfe sheets don't look to bad.

So the next job is creating the road and goods yard area and finish off the ballasting by filling in the middle bits of the track.

Hi Everyone.

I had a bit of a accident in my car on Sunday so I hadn't done any work on the layout until this afternoon.

The bonnet flew up at 55mph cracking the windscreen and denting the bonnet, thankfully no one was around at time.

Back to the layout:

We have put in the road and done the goods yard area too.

Next is to put in the pavements, walls etc and finish the ballasting.

Hi Everyone.

Well after what has been a pretty hectic week I can finally do some more on the layout so today I am going to the model shop and going to buy the low relief terraced houses from Metcalfe and add it to the layout, I also need to get some pavements.

After that I will get the low relief shop fronts kit, street lights etc.

More soon.

Jerry.
