Stephen Freeman
Does anybody know of a source of 1.6mm (or1.5mm come to that) 3.33 mm wide and 4mm wide plywood timbering strip? The 0.8mm variety isn't a problem for me to get hold of but the thicker variety is. I know C&L list it but: 1) Trying to get anything out him is somewhat difficult at the moment (I have had another order "processing" for at least 2 weeks). 2) Although showing as being available when you try to check out, the website won't let you despite the absence of the 3 asterisks, as it says items with *** are out of stock. I give up! At the moment the only solution I can see is to stick 2 of the 0.8mm strips together. Edited September 24, 2017 by Stephen Freeman

Tim Horn (I understand he supplies Scalefour Stores with their 0.8mm strips) is going to do me some 1.5mm thick strips, which will meet my requirements. RMweb Gold Enterprisingwestern Posted September 29, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 29, 2017 As the real thing isn't plywood, wouldn't something like basswood/lime strips be better. There are some near enough equivalents available. Mike.

hayfield
Interesting idea.. there must be some reason though that everyone uses ply? Good quality ply will retain its shape and I guess is much stronger than wood for punching holes in when the use or rivets was the norm. I also assume ply is both cheaper and easy to get than wood strip, its also laser cut so is more accurate than using a saw blade
brack
Ply is more stable/ less likely to warp. Given that sleepers might well get doused in watery glue during ballasting that may be significant, especially if you're hoping it'll hold track to gauge accurately. RMweb Gold Enterprisingwestern Posted October 1, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2017 I use basswood, although I glue rather than rivet and solder, so the hole punching isn't a problem. Mike.
Stephen Freeman
OK, I'm sorted. Tim Horn is sending me some, I have also found another source of supply as well, so the project can proceed apace.
Stephen Freeman
Now arrived, they would have been here sooner except for the machinations of the Royal Mail. We couldn't be in for the original delivery and it took 2 attempts and a whinge to get them redelivered.
