Locomotive Background

76084 was subject to a fully documented, “bottom-up” 16-year restoration and entered into service in July 2013 at the North Norfolk Railway.

The guiding objective was to complete the restoration to MT276 and RSP 6 (main line standard) and to ensure that the workmanship was good for 20 years (i.e. not just “get it through 10 years”). All subsequent care and maintenance has been done with the same objectives and guiding principles.

The quality of this restoration, and subsequent maintenance regime, is reflected in the locomotive’s very high in service reliability.

Since completing the restoration 76084 has been fully equipped for running on Network Rail (GSMR, OTMR, TPWS – mark IV) and registered on TOPS (98484).

76084's operating miles on Network Rail and heritage railways has been fully recorded. It is about to operate on Network Rail on 27 September 2017. This will be the last of the season North Norfolkman dining trains for the North Norfolk Railway.

76084 comes with a quantity of spares, sufficient to support main line running (springs, hoses etc.).

76084 is classified as 4MT. As such it is a medium power locomotive economical on both fuel and water but with a performance that belies its classification.

Notes for Editors

1. 76084 was built at Horwich in April 1957 for British Railways and was allocated to Lower Darwen (24D later 10H) along with sister locomotives 76080-83 inclusive. In mid 1965 at the closure of Lower Darwen she was transferred to Sutton Oak which had its own allocation of 5 of this class (76075/6/7/8 and 9). She finished her BR days at Wigan Springs Branch from where she was sold to Woodham Brothers being taken to Barry in a convoy with 3 other class members in July 1968.

2. 76084 spent 14 years and 7 months languishing at Barry and was the 143rd locomotive to leave being bought in 1982 by Phil Rollins who transported the locomotive and tender in January 1983 by road to his South Levington home. 76084 and tender were given a cosmetic makeover.

3. Sadly Phil died in the mid 1990’s leaving the 76084’s future uncertain. In 1997 the 76084 Locomotive Company Limited was formed and purchased the locomotive. She was moved to her present home at Ian Storey's Works near Morpeth, Northumbria 4. 76084 steamed for the first time in preservation in May 2013 returning to traffic in July 2013.

5. Since returning to steam 76084 has had all the main line safety systems fitted and passed to run on Network Rail at a cost of approximately £100k.

6. 76084 has performed on several main line charters and provided the steam power for North Norfolk Railway’s North Norfolkman dining trains through summer 2017
