EddieB
In contrast to PenrithBeacon's pictures from a steaming day, I decided to pay a visit yesterday on a "static day". In theory, nothing is in operation on such dates, but most of the buildings are open. It's a lot quieter than on a steaming day, but most of the operational industrial locos are put away inside the sheds. It suited my purpose as I particularly wanted to renew my acquaintance with "Cornwall" and do some experimental photography. Weekdays have the bonus of freight trains running through to Calvert. Yesterday the first of three such trains was hauled by the celebrity 66779 - just a pity that it caught me unprepared! Here is the third freight, with 66100 in charge. Far from being the quiet day I expected, there was some unexpected activity. Pannier tank 9466 was having its boiler inspection (all satisfactory, I'm pleased to report). The little chain drive Sentinel was in steam. It was also the day that Metropolitan No. 1 was being put onto a low loader for transfer to North Weald (having been steamed only the previous day). During the morning, No. 1 was lined up ready by the Ruston shunter. After the arrival of the low loader, the first step was to build a track ramp to enable the locomotive to be winched onto the decking. Once in the place, the locomotive was secured with shackles. Victorian steam locomotives are both heavy and delicate and the job of loading had to be carried out with the utmost care and professionalism. All in all, it took around three hours to be completed and the locomotive was finally ready to move off from the site.

RMweb Gold chris p bacon Posted October 15, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 15, 2017 We had a GNR Society trip there earlier in the year to see the Ex GN coaches they have either under restoration or in the vintage train. We had a superb day and were made very welcome. Sadly there wasn't anything in steam so as a recompense we were given a walk through the 12W LNWR Dining car which was excellent.

RMweb Premium Davexoc Posted March 3, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 3, 2019 Braved the weather and went along today. Turned out to be an excellent day out with youngest daughter and grandson in tow. Pannier tank 9466 was in steam alongside 6989 with the added bonus of 2469 giving brake van rides. Some of the brake van rides ran in tandem with 6989, so had a side by side view on 6989 in action. Thanks to all the volunteers who turned up to make an out of season event happen, well done... RMweb Premium Davexoc Posted August 25, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 25, 2019 This weekend Quainton is celebrating it's 50th Anniversary. Lots going on, and some stock that is usually shedded is out in the sunshine. Haven't seen top and tail brake van rides before. 6989 and Met 1 operating the main services, while two industrials run the brake van rides, vintage coaches and demostration freights, plus driver for a fiver (if you were suitably attired, so not many takers in the 32 degrees heat). Then there was the UK Railtours charter with D6515 - LU 4-TC - 20142/007 running in and out twice, also runs tomorrow. Can recommend the front brake van verandah as it had the best air conditioning of all the stock.... Oh, and gives some good photo opportunities providing you have reasonable image stabilisation. Good day out, happy grandsons, and even the girls enjoyed it.... Dave
