As some of you will know I’ve had a few threads covering my weathering and layouts etc but as I’ve not got a fb group under the 8N name I thought I’d combine all my weathering work, track building and scratch building under the one thread on here rather than all over the show. My Edge Lane Junction thread will still continue though as I’m hoping to get going on the 7mm version of that very soon.

Over the last few months I’ve been developing my weathering techniques since moving up to O gauge and I’ve lately been lucky enough to be getting a few commissions in all gauges and also commissioned to build some EM gauge track.

All these will be covered on this thread.

As always please feel free to comment, here are some photos of my latest work in 7mm and also here is a link to my fb group incase anyone wishes to join.

The class 13 pictured below was converted from two Dapol 08 but not by me, unfortunately a few bits were missing so I’m doing my best rectify these for the client, suck as increasing the buffer beam thickness and adding vac pipes, the loco isn’t finished yet and still has Maskol on the windows ;)

Cheers

I was asked earlier if I could do a how to of how I’ve weathered the 08’s and cl13 so here’s a quick run through.

To weather the body I build up layers of of grime, this is done by adding weathering powders, I tend to use a mix of black, light and dark earth. Before the powders are added I tend to add some weathered black acrylic paint to the grills, once this is added I add the powders and then seal it with matt varnish. When it’s dry I then remove a lot of the weathering using a fibre/scratch pen, be careful with these though as the fibres get everywhere and they’re not pleasant especially if they get stuck in yours fingers. Once removed I brush the excess powder and fibres away then repeat the process on the body with more powder.

Depending how dirty you want the loco I sometimes repeat this up to five times this will also fade the paint to, then once I’m happy with the look it’s sealed a for a final time.

For the chassis I add various mixes of paint and powder, mostly blacks and greys at first and to get the oily look gloss varnish is worked into the appropriate then black powder is worked into the varnish. Depending on how you want the chassis to look (older green 08’s tend to have a more rusty brake dust look to them and blue shunters more black and oily) I then work in some rust powder and a mix of light and dark earth.

Again this is then finely sealed with varnish and then using an airbrush I blow any excess powder away.

Here’s a couple of pics of two green 08’s, one I did for a client the other month and one I’m currently working on.

Tonight’s work, transfers added to one side of 08096, even though this 08 was green the post tops numbers were added to a br blue background, over the weekend I’ll give this side a final light dusting of weathering then seal it and move onto the other side.

Cheers

Unable to view them on my laptop, get a message rambling on about codecs which goes way over my head, I probably need to upgrade the valves or trim the wick.
