And one for track bashers! The pair of running lines in the distance are for the extension to the airport. The trams run off the standard 750v dc overhead, but in the city centre run on battery power. these are recharged by a centre 3rd rail in the road which livens up when the tram stops. the system is due to open in December 2017. We were invited to an open day there in early October. the weather was fine, the crowds were out and about in their thousands. there was live music, loads of food stalls, open day at the depot and control room and we were allowed to look on the roofs of the trams via the overhead walkways.
