RMweb Premium Banger Blue Posted October 18, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 18, 2017 I liked the look of the Cake Box Challenge as soon as I read about it, (i.e it sounded like something even I could have a go at ) so I'm taking the plunge and here's my entry: As the name suggests it's basically a close up of a fuelling point on a generic diesel depot in the BR Blue era. I've cut some card to 8" by 8" to see what fits. Infrastructure will be limited to just the track and the fuelling station itself. The office block seen in the pictures may be included in the final version or it may make way for something like a grounded van with more depot clutter around. Like most folk (I imagine) I'm aiming to try and use what I already have lying around. The initial concept photos:
Jerry1975
Looking good, I was going to do something similar but settled on my current plan. Jerry.
RMweb Premium Banger Blue Posted March 2, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 2, 2018 Rest days combined with snow has finally seen some progress on my CBC project. The cardboard base has been upgraded to hardboard (salvaged from a broken photo frame and cut to size). Painted using some cheapo paint picked up from the likes of The Works. A couple of old lengths of track have been cut to size, stuck down and ballasted. Next to the small office block is a small patch of greenery along with a bicycle stand. The track and surrounding area still need to be weathered to a suitable level of grubbiness and various details added but the basics are there. Anyway some pics of the build so far:
Andrew Cockburn
Looks interesting so far, would I be correct to assume that the building (staff office?)/fuelling point are from the Bachmann Branchline OO range?

Hi Andrew Thanks, yes you are correct, both buildings are from the Bachmann Branchline OO Scenecraft range: 44-039 ‘Office Block’ 44-040 ‘Diesel Fuelling Point’
009 micro modeller
Looking nice so far. I think the track looks good and having only half of the front track is an interesting idea.
Andrew Cockburn
I'm doing something similar for my latest/new cakebox project, ie a steam-turned diesel shed, though its been on hold recently as my garage/workshop has been a bit too cold to work in. However, from what I gather the weather is due to start improving sometime soon, so I may just be able to make a start on the model this weekend sometime, and I'll start posting progress reports in due course .... RMweb Premium Banger Blue Posted March 15, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 15, 2018 A bit more “visualisation”: Depot Signage to add, downloaded from the Scalescenes range. On the workbench, bollards painted & waiting installation and some traffic / no parking cones (transfers to add): This chap has turned up from ModelU. He may or may not be reporting for duty, that will probably be dependant on my painting skills! Let’s see what happens!
RMweb Premium Banger Blue Posted March 21, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 21, 2018 Quick twenty minutes or so this morning, barrels, bollards glued down and some signs added: Thanks for looking.
Guest ShildonShunter
This is a great little layout so much going on and your modelling skills are great. I love the ground cover.
RMweb Premium Banger Blue Posted March 28, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 28, 2018 A couple more little additions such as NTBM boards, a tail lamp (Modelu) perched on the buffer stop and some depot staff have put in an appearance. I would say this CBC project is more or less complete although between now and November I’m sure there may be a few details added here & there! As for the Modelu Driver, he has at least gained a coat of grey primer and my painting attempt has so far only extended to painting his bag! Has anybody got any recommendations / advice for appropriate paint colours (eg Humbrol #34 etc) for the skin tone and for 1980s BR uniform please?

RMweb Premium Banger Blue Posted September 1, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted September 1, 2018 Entry submitted & emailed off: ‘On the Fuel Point’ A snapshot of a generic 1980’s British Rail diesel depot. 03371 sits on the Fuel Point awaiting attention from the Depot Fitters, Bert & Ernie, who can be seen in conversation outside the stores. That’s either a list of repairs for the 03 in Bert's hand or it’s the lunch list that he’s about to give to his mate and dispatch him in their trusty Transit to the local greasy spoon! In the background, Driver Jones heads to the Supervisors office to book off. The base was constructed from a broken picture frame, I decided to cut the front track in half, to give more space on the board and hint at the rest of the lines. The track was given a liberal dose of an ‘Oil Stain’ wash to represent spilt diesel & oil. The 03 is an older Bachmann model. The Fuel Point & Office Block are Bachmann RTP products. Depot signs are Scalescenes, The bollards, pallet, traffic cones (why does one always end up on the roof?) and ‘Not to be moved’ boards are all from ScaleModelScenery. Bert & Ernie are Bachmann and Driver Jones is from the excellent Modelu range (as is the stand pipe). A few more pics to add to those submitted: Really enjoyed the CBC and good luck to all who have entered.
