D854_Tiger
From what I've read and from comments here, I believe the GW bi-mode changeover will be an automated process utilising GPS and performed on the move in those places where it will need to be done so. So what mechanism, if any, will be used at places like Oxford, Swindon, Cardiff and Swansea where a station stop always occurs more or less at the changeover point and how will any mechanism know which train is required to changeover and which are not (e.g. terminating trains). Further on the ECML it's going to be more complicated, any automated mechanism will need to know which trains need to changeover, on the move, I'm specifically thinking of places like Newark (for Lincoln), Northalerton (for Middlesborugh) and Temple Hirst Junction (for Hull). Also what about empty stock moves and diversions, GW empty stock moves reach Hereford via Abergavenny and Cheltenham via Bristol Parkway.
RMweb Gold 96701 Posted October 19, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 19, 2017 There are a huge quantity of pages here. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/94506-class-800-updates/. I'm sure the answer is in there somewhere.
royaloak
There are manual changeover buttons in the cab.

D854_Tiger
And balises will be provided in the fullness of time. Will a balaise be able to instruct an Edinburgh bound train to stay on electric and a Hull bound train switch to diesel now
D854_Tiger
There are manual changeover buttons in the cab. Indeed, but I believed the intention was not to routinely rely on driver intervention.
modfather
There is a manual function in the cab. The driver will enter a route code before driving similar to a headcode. This will set up the train with route data such as platform side, length. This is amendable on the move by the driver as required.

Thought it might be something like that, then just a case of setting up balaises at all the (suitable) places where mode changeover is required, even the common diversionary routes could be accommodated. If an EC IEP is diverted via Carlisle all it would take is the signage and a balaise, somewhere near (north of) Carlisle that is suitable for a changeover and the train could switch to electric for the run up the WCML. It does suggest though that the changeover points will be best sighted away from stations where the track layout could be too complicated.
