I thought I'd start a topic to provide helpful links to fitting decoders in some of the 009 locos after hearing someone say you can't in many of them ;)

I started with and easy one, the Heljan Manning Wardle as it is fitted with a socket.

Remove the body by undoing the screw under the cab, removing the front pony truck and the screw hidden by the front pony truck. I used a Zimo mx622 with the pins shortened to about 4mm long. For a sound decoder you are going to have to remove the loco socket to provide enough length and the speaker is going to have to go in the cab unless you want to mill out the chassis.

I also insulated all sides with tape.

The body is very tight so I found pushing on the cab foor with the blunt end of a small paintbrush popped the back end out.

The front end can be eased up carefully with a flat blade or squared off coffee stirrer just under the front tanks. Note there's only a thin body so if you go too far you will be trying to lift off the cast tank and bend things ;)

Pop in the decoder the right way up and test :)

So that's it connected now to fit it in!

I drilled several small holes and joined them up. The decoder will be taped in against the cab front.
