Some Design Help needed please

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hi to all

i started a topic on this before , but due to computer problems { i lost everything on hard drive } and had to register again .

after many years out of the hobby i am now returning to it { as just retired }

i now have the baseboards in place , the size is 10 feet long by 32 inches wide .

Totally lost when it comes to design or design software { so some help would be  fantastic }

my stock consists of the following .

4 x class 37 in dutch livery  3 x class 60 in various livery

12 x seacow wagons  1 x windhoff

2 x class 47 { Royal Mail } and 8 x Royal Mail Parcel vans .

all locos are DCC equipped

also have a 4 road Bachmann engine shed , and a wash plant , plus a Bachmann station .

what i am trying to acheive is , something with small Royal Mail Depot and an Engineers Yard

need to make it intresting , as in moving trains around and getting trains ready to depart .

i have a large amount of Roco Geoline HO Track { which i can use } or just go for new track if need be .

was wondering if someone could do me up a plan if possible ?

The Roco Geoline track i have is handy as it is clip together and has the roadbed attached

i have 8 sets of points also .

any help would be fantastic

Many Thanks

RML

I assume this is a rerun of http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/126899-some-advice-needed-please/ by royalmail.  I am not sure why you didn't carry on from where you left off (you could have posted to the old thread I would have thought) or maybe all that was no longer relevant.  Mind you the problems seem the same?

If you want design software look on the web for the type of computer you have.  Most of it is now chargeable (Scarm, Anyrail) but there is some free stuff still XTrackCad, and Anyrail allows for 50 pieces of track/points for free.

You have rejected 2 levels now and in the past.

Hi imt

yes you are correct , it is a follow up to the old topic { now deleted } as everything on my pc was lost

two levels i think would be complicated for my skill level

you can see the problem i have with space from the pics

thanks for the input , i will search on google

cheers

The thread is still there - nothing has been deleted.  All that advice is still readable and remains good.  You have enough space for a return loop at the wider end of your board.  We have been through the discussions of hidden fiddle sidings and how you get to access them.  IF you had access all round you have space for a station of other railway installation (goods yard, engineering yard or whatever or some kind of mash up) at the front and a set up area (fiddle yard) for trains at the back.  You cannot reach through scenery or over more than 2 feet width without damaging yourself of bits of railway.  There is nothing wrong with the track you have to start with - though you may need more.  Its modular, so some software like Scarm or Anyrail will allow you to place bits together and get some idea of what you can build.  I have had a look at my Anyrail and it has Geoline track shapes in it.

I have just bashed this up using Anyrail.  I have no idea what track you have or the exact dimensions of your baseboard or even what you want.  I guess a loco servicing point with engineers sidings - though waht you do with the Virgin passenger kit I don't know.

You can see the names of the pieces I have used and how easy it is with this kind of software to put things together.

Imt, that is excellent, and gives me plenty of scope to mix and match the track

the track is Roco Geoline Ho  { its handy as its snap together and has the roadbed fitted }

i will go at it this afternoon and post some pics this evening of what i come up with .

the pendolino is off to Flea bay { as no room for it }

Again many many thanks for your help

I think it may be possible to fit Roco Track 61122  { R2 } into the end piece , which would give a run around

have to get my sizes right

the hafl circle at the other end is Roco 61123 which is  R3

Other concern is will the 37,s and the 47,s and the 60,s run on the Roco 61122

Even being able to get a return loop at one end adds a lot to the possibilities.

The potential difficulty is access to the back of the baseboard but it should be possible to have some hidden sidings somewhere behind a moveable backscene and mirrors mounted on the wall for you to see the sidings when all functioning well.

Going back to my previous remark about two levels, with the solid baseboard that you have, the easiest option is to lay the low-level track first and then put in some blocks cut from 3x2 timber to support the upper level.

Hi joseph , i just ordered the 2nd radius track , so will see how that works out when it arrives , fingers crossed .

as you said it opens it up to more possibilities

access is not a problem to the back of the boards , as they are on castors and can be pulled forward , and the mirror is in place :imsohappy:  by pure luck it was there already .

will wait to see how the track works out before i attach the backdrops

many thanks to you and all on here for the help

i would not have got this far without all the help from the folks on here

I think you have to face the fact the the Roco track R2 at a radius of 14.09 inches is somewhat less that the Hornby/Peco Setrack radius 1 at 14.61 inches.  Most large locos will NOT go round Hornby R1 - they require R2 which is 17.24 inches radius - so I doubt if the small Roco stuff is any use to you.  I do not understand how you have a Roco R2 semi circle on your current layout which would require a diameter of 34.22 inches which is wider than your claimed 32"????

Maybe you need to re-measure or check the rail numbers OR Anyrail has it wrong (it is usually right).  R1 is 61122 and R2 is 61123 and I expect it is moulded into the track somewhere underneath - for Hornby/Peco it is anyway.

Hi imt

sorry for the mix up

there are two boards , the first board is 32 wide

the second is 48 wide { which i intended cutting down smaller }

the track that is on that board at the moment is Roco radius 3

the 32 wide board is just a tad too short for the radius 3

i may wait and see how it goes with the track thats ordered , if there is no luck with that , i may get another board cut that i can put the radius 3 on

that would give me the option of extending your plan

sorry for the confusion

Herewith another quick slash at the problem.  Note the board is set at 4ft by 10ft and I have greyed out the difference between the 32" and 48" witdths.  I have put an R3 half circle at both ends, and an R2 at the right.  As I say I don't think your locos will go round it, but try it in real life when the rail arrives.  If you PM me your email address I will send you the Anyrail file, I cannot load it here.

just a quick update

track arrived { and now i need more } so another 3 days to wait .

now the Bachmann 4 road engine shed is too large for the layout { so if anybody need one give me a shout }

plus one loco is also going as i no longer have a need for it { vi trains class 37 Dutch livery DCC Sound fitted .ex condt boxed }

i will now concentrate on doing  a large Royal Mail Depot { as thats about all i will be able to fit on the boards }

will update pics towards the end of the week when the remainder of the track arrives
