Popular Post MikeTrice
For the last several months I have been suffering a distinct lack of modelling mojo. This is in spite of having several unfinished projects all crying out to be finished. Something about the Cakebox Challenge appealed. I really struggle to find suitable space for any finished models. Surely I could find room for a 8" * 8" * 6" box? I have for many years had a soft spot for Kings Cross visiting on a number of occasions to take extensive photos. I have also always wanted to model it but lacked the space. In spite of my lack of space I have had an idea floating around in my brain for a micro based on part of Kings Cross. Could a adapt it to suit a cakebox? So the idea is to model one end of one of the train sheds in N gauge but expect the viewer to peer through the central supporting wall to see anything. I have spent the last few nights trying to draw out a section of the West offices using Inkscape and produced the following mockup of my idea: Shifting viewing position produces: One more: Changing viewpoint shows how the diorama is put together: The mock up has been made to 2mm per foot and works out 8" * 8.75" * 6 so fails the existing criteria. I have concidered compressing the cross section which would not be obvious when viewing through the central support wall apertures but rather like the view straight on to the shed cross section. Instead reducing the scale by 90% will bring it within the correct dimensions. Originally I intended to just produce one half of the roof, following the correct curve (unlike the mockup) but if I opt for the end view might model the whole arch. From laziness I will probably reproduce Kings Cross as it is now rather than in the 30's. So lots to do and I really need another photographic session there before going much further. I just hope any mojo regained persists for the duration.

Old-sparky
It's a brilliant idea, but please look at the 1930s colour images here before finally committing to a modern scene - they are sooo atmospheric. http://picssr.com/photos/swift-valley/interesting?nsid=36856551@N00 Edited November 1, 2017 by Old-sparky
Hroth
Brilliant concept - will you have the Hogwarts shop as well ? Hogwarts Castle could be at the buffer stops..... Levity (and upsetting the Warner IP bulldogs...) aside, KX in a cakebox is a cracking idea! Edited November 1, 2017 by Hroth

MikeTrice
Before embarking on a second mockup (I find them a useful reference) I thought I would try assembling my Hobbycraft Cakebox. Unsurprisingly the 8" * 8" dimension is for the outside of the box. In order to fit in it my finished diorama needs to be slightly smaller, around 7 3/4" * 7 3/4". Glad I checked. Londontram
Please for the love of railways avoid anything Harry Potter related! Alex Well that's scuppered my plans I was going to have a section of a viaduct with the Hogwarts express crossing it and a Ford Anglia fixed to a bit of fine (0,3 nickle silver wire) as if its floating in front of the train being chased by it. I'll have to think again now. Steve

Hogwarts was a Hall after all and is fiction, all the entries are fictitious, well apart from KX
MikeTrice
Mk2 mockup produced 90% smaller: I have had to thin the sides a bit but it fits. Just!

MikeTrice
This is how things will look with a roof in place. In hindsight I can reduce the height of the side walls. I do not intend to detail the exterior part of the roof, there will be more than enought to do on the interior. Roof will be glazed though.
RMweb Gold chris p bacon Posted November 2, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 2, 2017 Are you sure that fits in a cake box...... You haven't used a wedding cake box by chance ?. . .actually, thinking about it, you'd have hotel curve and the met/circle booking hall included if you did.

MikeTrice
Are you sure that fits in a cake box...... Only just. Still trying to work out how I am actually going to build it. The Silhouette will feature a lot I suspect. Edited November 2, 2017 by MikeTrice

James Harrison
Lovely idea!- if it were my model though it'd have to be set in the 1870s/ 80s. Get a couple of the Matchbox Duke of Connaught models, scratchbuild some outside cylinders and tenders, some GNR carriages.....

RMweb Gold Mikkel Posted November 2, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 2, 2017 Going through some of my many photos I have found this which shows what I am aiming for: IMG_0081.JPG Lovely stuff Mike, best design solution to the "micro terminus" concept I've seen yet. I especially like the side view. And looking at your last shot of the real thing: Have you considered doing the end glazing too? Imagine the view from that end and looking in! But you'd need a backscene then...

Yes the end will be glazed and the centre of the roof. Also, not shown, there will be openings on the right hand side where passengers enter so there will bepotential views through those as well.
