DougN's LNER NE inspired layout

Hi all,

I have been a long time member of the forum though no one has seen what I have been up too bar a few members here in Melbourne.

A Brief description on construction and philosophy!

Layout is 14'6"x 4'3" split in half for getting into and out of the room if ever required. The layout is unashamedly OO using RTR and RTP buildings. I have made progressive use of Woodlands scenics and the Hornby products for the trees et al. Control is using DCC, I started wiring for dual control ie DC and DCC though as I have chipped all the loco's and most of the visiting stock is now fully chipped (that includes SRman's interlopers) I see little point in continuing with the switches which will appear in the following photos. I am currently debating going DCC for the point control though the idea of 150quids work of decoders is putting me off compared to about 20quids worth of wire to a stud and probe control <_<. The figure 8 design with return loop. The layout is built on the L girder principal with bulk areas filled with EPS sheet retrieved from a builders skip opposite SRman's place late one evening! This is covered with "artistic" plaster from Bunnings (the Aussie equivilent to B&Q)

This is OO as it is intended to be a layout that James (son) can use at times, he seems to be hooked on the blue diesel rolling stock  All items bought in (this is at odds to my previous thoughts as P4 modelling and putting every thing together route which I have done a resonable job at though time is lacking since kids and extending the house etc). Look through the photos and I would welcome a name as I havn't been able to think of one OR find one. Though Newtondale has a good ring  Though my other problem is the area it is located roams across the north east! The scenics need to be semi complete for October this year (2010) for the BRMA convention which if you are coming you can see in the flesh!

Go a head and ask questions and enjoy

Hi Doug. Great that you have decided to post those shots. I don't remember all that clear space beside the engine shed though!!! Someone has been busy cleaning up!!   ;)

I rather like the sound of Newtondale; I agree with you, it does have a nice ring to it. I'll see if I can think of any alternative suggestions but I don't think I'll be able to better your idea.

I have been rather busy with pulling the house apart again. However I did manage to spend an hour or two changing a corner. from this:-post-3192-127329603606_thumb.jpg

To this:-post-3192-127329610045_thumb.jpg

the general method that was used was to mix from the bag 3 of Hornby's scenic scatters onto the painted plaster then wet down with a spray bottle of water with detergent, Then to go over it with dilute PVA which I have about 50% PVA:Water. Then if the PVA mix is not penetrating the scatter to spray directly to the spot with the water/detergent mix which allows the PVA to penetrate. I have also used the Peco fencing and a little Woodlands Fine leaf folliage.

Rolling stock changes have been limited to installing sound on a Super D from Trains on time.

Not to mention running in my Heljan class 15!

I saw this last week and, besides the fact that it is not really tipped up on end ( !! ), it looks very good. The tyre tracks actually look better in the flesh than the photo shows.

Looking forward to hearing that Super D. I'll bring around that bass enhanced speaker too, to see if it is feasible to fit it - if it will fit in, it's yours! We'll have to do a video of it running around to post in the DCC sound thread.

Hi Doug,

Nice looking layout there. What about Newton Abbey? Newton Downs, Newton Rises? Newtondale sounds good too. How does your stock manage to stay on the track? Have you introduced the old triang magdahesion to your stock?

Look forward to seeing it "in the flesh"

Mark

Ah yes I must remember to change the photos before posting. I am trying to get more done for the Convention in the way of scenics. I think I may be able to get most of the layout reasonably well sceniced by October. Oh it is only 4 and abit months away!

The tractor tracks that SRman is refering too were rolled into the "fine" brown Woodlands ballast when wet. They are pretty easy and quick to do but you do have to clean the Oxford Diecast tractors each time.

Hi Doug,

you certainly have been busy. There’s a lot happened there since I last saw your layout. It’s coma along nicely. I’ll try and get a free night when Sarah’s not working and pop round soon.

cheers

Neil

Thanks Neil,

Been trying to keep everything rolling along nicely towards October. It usually gets about 4 to 8 hours running each weekend. I need to start doing more scenicing though when SRman last came over we found one the Curves at the other end to the layout that have been ballasted but not much in the way of scenic work done, need to be lifted and moved around for clearance purposes. I think it is only 3 to 5mm but some long coaches can clout each other  .

Also the white "scar" on the upper photo is where again I had to adjust the bank as the underframe on the CL158 clouted the "rock" and I have yet to get around to repainting!

Well you will allow visitors (read: trouble-makers!) to come over and run non-LNER stock! wink.gif Even so, some of your own stock was just a little close on that particular curve. It is probably wise to alter it before it causes too much frustration.

It is developing into a very nice layout for watching (and listening to) the trains running within scenic surrounds.

I should add that since my own layout has been demolished, Doug has been kind enough to allow me to run-in new locomotives and units such as the 150 and 158 (and cause problems with longer and wider stock than his own!). laugh.gif

Well the problem end has been pulled up and a solution to the coach problem has been found. Took a couple of hours yesterday to increase the diameter. As I had made a big mess any way I have played with the gradient. I still can't get the reliability of the scenic'ed end but it is closer. My LNER K3 will go up the gradient with 18 wagons on. Though as I was playing around I noticed that the down gradient at this end is causing problems with the WD and the newly chiped V3 (again a nice 45 minutes to convert). I will now change this throat around to make sure everything works correctly. Now that this lot has happened I need to run trains for a hour or 10 with each and every loco and train type. :D

It has raised another curious issue in that the surface mount point motor I have from Hornby, I don't think work peco points  therefore I have to under mount a point motor in one of the worst spots known to railway builders! This is at the top of the gradient where the L guirder/ bearer and 2 surface boards all meet.

Then back to re ballast the area and then to the scenic works.

I will put a few new photos up soon.

Well since the last update. I hve installed 2 gallows and a light! the layout is lite up like day light now. All from a light fitting scavanged from work! it is a 28watt 1200long fluro. (A versilux "slim" fitting including lead and plug) Since changing the framing around at the back of the layout it ment the 2 sidings that are secret! needed to have the alinements changed by 19mm (the thickness of the pine gallows) So in all about 6 hours of tight carpentry work! (Joy... I do really enjoy it! :) ) The light fitting certainly needs a blinder as Neil saw on Wednesday night otherwise you have to wear sunglasses B). On wednesday I also fitted another pointmotor on the framing joint refered to above, I used a new set of hole saws I have purchased (not the cheap variety!) worked a dream! Then again they should due to costing almost a loco!

Will eventually have to make a control panel for the points (none are powered currently!) That will change the operations afair bit as I tend not to use the storage sidings due to it being difficult to change the points manually. I have the Acrylic for the panel just need time!

I promise I will get photos up soon but as the home computer has died I keep forgeting to bring it in to work!

Hey Doug. Good to hear of further progress. As for carpentry, you can have that all to yourself ... not my forte at all!! ;)

On the other hand, computers are one of my strengths - just bring it over and we'll have a look see.

Well I have been at it again. Attached are a couple of photos's of how things are looking. I have been doing a lot of cleaning due to dust from plastering and painting the room Ug :( but I think I have now cleared the canvas so to speak so I can get some platform surface down, and finish off more of the "old village" as I am going to call it with the newer town behind it (terrace houses and 3 story shops etc. you really can't tell what I spent 2 weeks mucking around getting the lighting gantry up!.You can just make it out in the second photo. It is a 28watt single fluro on a couple of gallows style gantry. See the next couple of photo's. Now I need to get on with some more buildings and scenic work. Lets see what this week brings! :) (hopefully it is 2 pubs and an ROD!)

Thanks for the kind words, First PCM yes the thing that has happened is I cleaned the layout off of all the "other" rolling stock and cleaned more of the plaster dust off it. Looking back I need to take another photo or 2 of the other end which is the nice end! The things that have happened is a shelf has been added to the rear over the hidden sidings and the low relief buildings have been moved rearward! This is all caught up in the lighting gallows. The hidden sidings needed to me moved 20mm to allow the supports to rise up. Therefore a structural member relocated more track base... You could say major surgery  All is now done and I need to think about the control panel and some sort of detection as you have no idea where trains are in the hidden sections, for well they are hidden.

Arpley, Thanks for the comments the Super D is a Bachmann with sound! B) It is really cool. It is one of 2 loco's that will run and run and run on the layout with no input from me. It is usually left running for a couple of hours each weekend Though the sound gets switched off after about 15minutes. The sound is nice but it does get on your nerves after about 15 minutes.

Hi Doug,

The changes look good. Obviously improve things.

I can understand the issue with sound after 15mins.

An Bachmann 04 will look good when you get it. I think mine should be arriving this week, hopefully.

Ah Mark you have beaten me to it mine arrived last night and has not even been run. I was going to try to get a photo of it in the same spot! I understand that Howes have sound avaiable for the ROD and I think once the pocket has recovered one might be heading my way.

One problem I did have with the ROD was 1 of the 4 spigots to the tender jambed up, so the top wouldn't come off. Eventually the spigot sheared off, by the look it was only a peice about 0.5mm long. Then I could get the DCC Chip in... but some one said dinner was ready :) and the a wire had come adrift on the DCC programing track. So I took the loco back to pride of place on the TV for the evening.

Tonight it will get a run in and program.... hopefully a few photo's along the way also!.

Well Mark. Below is a photo of the ROD on the layout chipped and running. It is a nice powerful loco which will end up with a lot of running in in the next few years!

post-3192-127786822267_thumb.jpg

It does everything a new loco should! I have to add the detailing bits but there are only 5 items 2 cylinder pipework and 2 screw couplings and a vacuum pipe. All sitting on the layout ready for a little glue!

Now here is a photo of the more secniced section of the layoutpost-3192-127786863373_thumb.jpg

After being Relogated to page 4 a little update is required and a reminder to all BRMA members and RMwebers that I have a meeting this saturday. You are all welcome but I would appreciate a phone call or PM if you are comming. I know that the following are joining me.

SRman,PCM, and Neil Wood.. So if you are comming a little though on how the scene should be completed (in the next couple of months). I have also ordered a few Wills kits to fill in bits so it will be a watch this space.

Well Work has seriously been getting in the way of good modelling. A couple of things have appeared on the layout. Also I have had trouble with one of the Digitrax controlers (the DT400) I think it had been knocked off the layout during some running. It was still working but all you could see on the display was 8 faint squares. An email to Digitrax help line and they solved the problem straight away with a easy fix. That saved a trip to the US for the controller :) :) . I thought less than 24 hour turn around onthe advise was fantastic from the crew at Digitrax :good_mini:

Well my birthday present turned up from TMC and I was well pleased (though the trip to Australia hadn't been knid to the 4 chimney pots or the sign that was found floating in the box :sad_mini2: But 10 minutes and a little superglue back to :smile_mini:

So they have been temporarily placed on the layout (or is that a train wreck!)

post-3192-128307109253_thumb.jpg

As no doubt you can make out it is the Goathland hotel. Seems to fill this little park of the layout nicely.... to the point that I might have to rearrange the buildings a little. (the fire station may need to be on the otherside of the station now!)

I also have :

post-3192-128307126248_thumb.jpg

Which is the Beckhole pub. ( I have always thought you can never have to many pubs)

An overall of the new Engine shed. This is the new shed I built at the last exhibition. I think it looks to be the right size at 5 bays long.

post-3192-128307139697_thumb.jpg

Other thank that the layout has seen little in the way of additions! I have some mininature weeds to go in a few spots once I have finalised what I am doing with the back half of the layout. I have started thinking I may need to change my ideas as the Left hand end is coming together so nicely. Do I go down the groty 1930s developments route with industry or do I go more country village???? or combination....suggestions warmly welcomed.
