WIMorrison
I am going to start building a new layout and a benefit ot waiting to build it has been an increase in the space I will be allowed to use I have come up with the attached idea for a 3m x 2m L-shaped design in H0e and would appreciate any feedback on ways that IO could improve the design before I commit to building - it is much easier to change things on a PC than it is on a model when the baseboard is cut and track stuck down Any ideas will be gratefully accepted! DCB
Is it a European narrow gauge line or a UK one? There doesn't seem to be much operational potential nor do the stations seem to be delineated
WIMorrison
It is H0e therefore European, hence the name Damenfeld Can you explain the delineated comments regarding stations please as I don’t understand that. Regarding operating potential I think it has similar to most plans and layouts that I have seen - what would you suggest would improve it?
Zomboid
It's not really clear what you intend to use each area for. If you label it with "station", "treacle mine" and "alligator swamp" etc it'll be easier to understand what you've got in mind. Might also be worth posting in the appropriate overseas sub forum to get the attention of the subject matter experts.
RMweb Gold Harlequin Posted November 8, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 8, 2017 (edited) The depth of the baseboards, at 0.75m, might be difficult to reach across for modelling and train rescue - if the back of the layout is fixed to the wall. And of course Pythagoras says that to reach into the back corner is even further - just over a metre. Edited November 8, 2017 by Harlequin
WIMorrison
Luckily I am over 6’ tall which makes it easier to reach the back of the boards In past layouts I have used a space frame construction which has enabled me to get into tunnels or more distant areas and I propose to use this approach again. The only point that *may* be in a tunnel will be the right hand of the triangle but it will be at the tunnel mouth and shouldn’t present an issue. With all the other hidden areas being simple curves cleaning is easy with the CMC cleaning car and the chances of derailment or very low. Hopefully this addresses the concerns
RMweb Gold Harlequin Posted November 8, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 8, 2017 Actually, 0.75m is easily reachable, isn't it. I don't know what I was thinking! D'Oh!
DCB
Is the viewing from "Inside" the L or outside? Sort of guessing Swiss Zillertalbahn sort of stock, Welshpool and Llanfair on a mountain? At present it needs a turntable to give a reason locos come back chimney first (Turned at both ends of a journey) and continental style track layout, they like loops rather than dead end sidings, Viewed from outside it could be a really good exhibition layout but that would be very different from one designed to be viewed from inside. WIMorrison
A few more diversions and I have modified to this layout which will be viewed from inside the L, once more I invite comments as it is much easier to change on a computer screen than when down on the boards and soldered up
RMweb Premium Vecchio Posted November 17, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 17, 2017 I think it looks good and there is no issue with reaching every piece of track on this layout. I like the wide radius curves which if in the right scenery will give it a very natural look. Looking forward to your updates. Vecchio
WIMorrison
The good thing about not rushing into build is that sometimes you can grab more space which is what I have managed to do - though this will be as far as I can go as I have reached walls and doors that stop further expansion Any views or suggestions on this incarnation please? WIMorrison
The layout finally made good Kanichenbau is the exhibition part of Damenfeld
WIMorrison
Here is a video showing Kaninchenbau, which is the exhibition part of my home layout running as it would when at an exhibition. It has now been exhibited at several exhibitions and at the last one it was switched on at 08:00 and then switched off at 17:30 and in between those times all I did was talk and drink many cups of tea! It was wonderful being able to explain to people what automation is all about and demonstrate the running without needing to constantly check the layout, change turnouts and stop or start trains (like people have to do on conventional layouts 😀) I hope you enjoy it, if you would like me to bring the layout along to your exhibition please message me or email kaninchenbau2020@gmail.com
