gordon s Posted November 17, 2017 Share Posted November 17, 2017 (edited) I've just come across an issue I hadn't experienced before with shorts across a switched frog where I have interlaced sleepers outside the switched frog section. It hadn't occurred to me before, so it was a good learning experience tracking it down. The options were to cut the sleepers shorter so they didn't protrude under the adjacent rails or gap the sleepers outside the rail section so that the end of the sleeper was dead. The third option I came up with was to move the isolation break away from the interlaced area, so that the whole section was switched to the same polarity and then interlaced sleepers wouldn't be a problem. The only issue then is the isolation breaks across the rail are asymmetrical and not opposite each other. I've normally made the breaks mid way in the crossover track with the slots directly opposite. I've taken various scans and marked up rail polarities and can't see an issue, but would prefer to check with other track builders if this is an issue before I cut the rails. Here's the crossover showing the interlaced sleepers and the proposed isolation breaks. Is there a problem I've missed? I thought that was the case in this situation, but as the years have increased I find it's easy to the miss the blindingly obvious.... For some reason I had got it into my head section breaks and isolation gaps had to be opposite each other. I suspect that came from reverse loops and power district breaks.
