Lord-Claud-Hamilton
Gentlemen, I am looking for a book on the railways of Lancaster as a Christmas present for a family friend. He is not (yet) really a railway enthusiast, but always shows an interest, especially in his home town of Lancaster....he lives in deepest darkest Norfolk now! He just remembers the last days of steam, through to BR Blue. It's not a location of interest to me and my online searches have not found the number of titles I expected. So I wondered if many of the experts found on RMWeb could recommend some books for us to consider? Any advice greatly appreciated. Chris
Branwell
Chris, "A North Lancashire Railway Album" (http://www.cumbrianrailways.org.uk/northlancs.php) is a good one. There's also a Dalesman book, "Railways Around Lancaster" but I'm not sure that'd be what you were looking for, and the only other one I can think of off the top of my head is "The 'Little' North Western Railway" by Martin Bairstow. Of the three, I'd recommend the CRA book. Regards, David
Leander
All three books have considerable merit but I agree with the choice of the Pearsall bothers photographic album. The quality of reproduction is outstanding and at the price represents excellent value for money. It,s available from the Cumbrian Railways Association, details are on the CRA website. Your friend won't be disappointed!
