Class 27 D5370-D5378

Hi All,

 

I am looking to model a 27 or two from the batch delivered new to Thornaby, without steam heat tanking equipment.

 

Firstly, which ones have Heljan produced? I have seen 5370 in green full yellow ends, and D5377 with full yellow ends and yellow window surrounds.  Have they done one as originally delivered, with stripe and small yellow panels?

 

Also, from the photos of the 2 mentioned above, there is a rectangular port on the roof, suspiciously located above where the tanks would be... am I right in thinking that this is the exhaust port?

 

My thinking being, that am I as well starting with D5356 which I happen to have, if there are mods which would be required on a model of one which is based on the right series anyway?  Is there much other than the exhaust port, heating tank and tablet catcher recess which is different between them?

Can't find any Heljan release exactly matching the colour scheme and numbers you are looking for, but this one may be the best starting point if you are prepared to do a bit of DIY to remove the boiler water tank:

It has the exhaust port in the standard position (post early/mid 1960s at any rate, not sure if they were placed in a similar position to the early 26 type as built) which is what I suspect you were referring to.

 

I modified the tanks on a Heljan 26 to do an air brakes version - as they clip into the chassis it will probably be necessary to glue the cut down one into place but its not a difficult procedure (especially compared to having to do a full repaint).

Edit: The Heljan D5356 I believe has no yellow warning panel, and has cabside token apperatus cut outs which the Thornaby ones didn't have afaik, so these would need filling in.

If you used the body from one of the later batch for your project it would be more accurate as it would have the correct cab windows and no tablet catcher. The non-boilered tanks are available as Heljan spares from Howes. Heljan have issued #2700 D5401; #2706 D5385; #2708 D5381 & #2710 D5403 in original liveries which would be the best for your project.

Thanks for the pointers!  Just to clarify, I presume that 'correct cab windows' is an improvement from Heljan, rather than replicating a difference between batches of the prototypes?

 

Yes, it is the exhaust port I was looking at. That's good that its one less thing to worry about!  I don't know a great deal about the 27s, and while I have the 'profile of 26/7s' book  as a good set of reference photos from later in life, there isnt much of the history and development covered.

 

Thanks for the link to the other thread Martyn - though I have already seen that.  It is very tempting to do a pair with the corridors connected... mine is for use on the ammonia & oil trains through Wharfedale, which they tended to double head before the 37s took over. I'm yet to find a photo of them on the train, but several references they were used (as far Skipton).

As Phil says

 

I tend to refer to them as "English" and "Scottish" locos. 

Those built for "England" had drop cabside windows, whilst the "Scottish" locos had to have sliding cabside windows because the token exchanger apparatus was designed to go in a recess underneath.  Those unboilered examples delivered to the NER were basically to "English" spec but without boiler or water tank. 

 

Obviously modifications started happening within years of delivery including welding up of gangway doors, livery changes etc. The "Scottish" ones, and the "English" ones (except D5383 which was withdrawn at Derby) then started having plated over token exchange gear and "Scottish" style sliding cabside windows.

I've found someone willing to swap my Scottish one for an English basis - so should be able to crack on in the new year!

 

Thanks for the continued pointers. Interesting to hear that one later got a boiler, though in my timeframe I don't need to worry about that particular detail.
