Z gauge anybody?

Hi everybody,

I just signed up to the forum after finding a great post via google... and being stunned by the amount of really great content about Swiss railway modelling!

What I don't find is anything that's specific to Z gauge. Is anybody here modelling so small?

I found some great posts here relating to N or HOm gauge - tunnel portals and the Zürich double-decker 3D model - and would love to find this sort of information for Z.

Z gauge is new for me and I'm just starting my build, having built a lot in N gauge (British Steam, predominantly LMS) before. Excited by the prospect of being able to model at Swiss mountain scale in Z!

Thanks for any tips, links, or contact from like-minded people here.

Robert

Hi Robert and welcome to the thread.

Maerklin are the only manufacturers of Swiss outline in z and generally have a small selection from crocodiles to Re460s and modern (not IC2000 yet) coaches.

I too have Swiss z scale and found a lot of stuff on fleebay.

Iirc, there is a shop in romanshorn (ch) which also produces / produced some z scale SBB coaches.

Hi John,

Thank you. Nice to know I'm not alone ;-)

Maerklin have the monopoly on Z Gauge SBB stock, yes. I've picked up a few items on eBay and the local auction site, ricardo. I was also lucky to find an Re 4/4 still in stock at the local conrad branch!

Do you happen to remember the name of the shop in Romanshorn? I'll have a search around. Sounds interesting!

I did have some items, (green Ae6/6, couple of bogies tankers) but sold all my z on a few years ago in an attempt to downsize collections. So it is out there somewhere being modelled. They were lovely models though, shame the scale isn't supported as well as larger scales. (Moved to Swiss 'N' for a bigger range of items, doesn't take up that much more space really)

Hi Robert,

Don't remember the shop's name but exit the station and it's up the main street across the road!

Was in Romanshorn on New Years Day; looks like the shop may now be a cafe / bar.

Hi there,

I am also interested in Swiss Z after visiting the Gotthard three times before the new tunnel opened and becoming foolishly convinced - while staring at the town  - that I could build a model of Wassen on the size of a door.

My trials and tribulations of building a Swiss modern image layout out of foamboard and kitbashing/painting/building in a scale and prototype I've not tried before are loosely detailed here :   https://zwassen.blogspot.com (https://zwassen.blogspot.com)

Including, among other things, repainting my passenger train into the current scheme

And repainting a pair of locos as BLS:

Cheers,

Darryl
