Dealing with ESU sound files - I KNOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING

Let me start by saying that I know absolutely NOTHING about the technical aspects of DCC and sound and ESU - NOTHING!!

I want to have several static speakers at specific locations by WHISTLE signs to deliver a specific (Chinese) steam horn sound - not DCC, just using a push button on the panel.

I asked on several China Rail forums for sound bites of this specific horn sound, but the only luck I've had is from someone who has sent me specific complete sound files for Chinese steam locos formatted for ESU in release 3.5 - I have absolutely no idea what that means, but I'm guessing it's all the sounds I would need to download into a ESU sound chip to replicate all the sounds of a JS or SY class loco.

The person who sent these to me told me that he has lost the original sound files and he now only has then formatted for ESU

All my DCC friends have told me that it would be very difficult to convert these to what I want - only the sound of the horn, nothing more.

Remember I really have no idea whatsoever about sound files or DCC - can anyone help please?

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul,

Let me get this correct.

You want to put speakers around your layout next to 'Whistle' signs that play a whistle noise when you press a button for that speaker on a control panel?

ESU Loksound decoders are for fitting inside the loco that give you realistic steam sounds including chuffs and whistles from with inside the loco itself.

If you want sounds from around your layout I suggest you call Fiona at DCC Supplies as I think that they do a unit that will do just that.

I've no connection with DCC supplies but I was talking about something like this with Fiona some time back.

Hope this helps.

Wiggy.

Yes,  don't start from where you are.   The ESU sound file isn't going to be a good route for this.

You'll do better to search around for videos online of the sound you require, isolate the sound you want (software called "Audacity" is good for this), and then load it back onto something to play the sound out through your speakers.   A small push-button operated sound file player (exist online, cheap) which can playback MP3 files is one way.

Hi Wiggy

Yes, I realise that the sounds are for fitting inside a loco. All my locos are fitted with Soundtrax economy sound chips and I don't want to replace all 14 with the vastly more expensive ESU chips. Moreover, I want a nice big speaker for the horn sound that will deliver a nice quality pure sound.

Thanks for your interest.

Yes, this is what I feared. The problem is that having asked around this chap in Holland was the only person who replied and he had lost his original recordings and so all the sounds he had were in this format.

I will try again to source just sound recordings that suit.

Thanks for your interest.

Hi Paul

I have a heap of recordings of JS and SY locos including air horns and whistles. More than happy to pull out some of these for you if you still need them.

Cheers

Hi

On eBay (other sites are available) you can get little sound modules for 99p

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MP3-Format-U-Disk-TF-Card-decoder-board-module-amplifier-decoding-audio-Player/272037297057

Load you sound file onto a usb stick or sd card and press the play button, connected to a small speaker hidden at the right location would do the job fine.

There are lots of free sound file sites to get the mp3 sound files you need.

I have a few of these playing looped ambient sounds on my layout, they can add a nice touch.

Hi Tony

Many thanks for this offer. I am now working with someone who is down loading sounds from videos on youtube ........ we are moving forward slowly but I think we have enough sounds now to be getting on with. Are any of your videos on YOUTUBE?

Hi Paul

No, mine are all .wav files recorded on professional equipment at Baiyin, Pingzhuang and Sandoaling in 2012. I can upload them to Dropbox or OneDrive if you still need them.

Cheers

Tony
