HO Scale Russian model railways

I'm always up for a challenge and when I was in Moscow earlier this year, I saw really good quality HO scale models of modern Russian railways and at the time, I saw who made them but since lost the paper with the name written on it.  They did seem very expensive but then I was at the model shop by a Russian Railway museum and model railway, so I suppose they would be like purchasing models from the NRM here.

Does anyone know the name and if they can be purchased here in the UK or in Europe?

Hi Jools,

Not sure about the models in question but Chris Whites website is probably worth a look if you're into Russian railways. http://www.redstarrailways.com

There is also a (Former) Russian Railways Webring at

Roco and Piko do some Russian stock and some specialist stuff turns up on eBay

For a real challenge, are you going to model to P3.5 standard using a track gauge of 17.5mm?

Hey, I said I'm up for challenge but not do the impossible  :mosking:  :mosking:  :mosking:

Hi, i’m In Moscow right now and have a collection of Russian SZD and RZD stock back home. The shop you were at is either Rocoland www.rocoland.ru or one of the Eurotrain shops www.eurotrain.ru

Rocoland is a great shop, but rather tricky to find, it has some good exclusives (mainly by LS Models / Roco) and a good selection but they don’t take cards which is a bit frustrating.

Eurotrain has it’s own manufacturing to a very high standard, but is rather pricey. Rocoland general sells Eurotrain production too.

Chris White at Red Star trains produces some great resin models and is lovely to deal with, however call him, don’t email.

Eurotrain stuff can now be bought in Menzels Lokschuppen in Dusseldorf, and occasionally there are Russian locos available in HO through the normal continental (Europe) manufacturers, Piko, Roco, Fleischmann. Modellbahnshop Lippe (google it) has a good selection generally and will post internationally from Germany.

LS Models do some excellent RZD sleepers and coaches. C&M Models in Carlisle are a good place and seem to order them in. Other shops will do this too, i’ve Just used C&M before and you need to be aware in advance of the production. Tillig / Heris and Eurotrain do the Ammendorf coaches that are synonymous with the Russian sleepers coming into Western Europe.

Good luck!

There is also a producer in Latvia called Modela www.modela.lv resin casts - so not the same quality as we’re used to nowadays.

Good luck!

I am saddened to report that Chris White of Red Star Models passed away on March 9, 2021, age 69. He will be missed by his Russian railway modeller friends and clients. A notice and link to his obituary is posted on the Red Star Models website.

I read the notice on the JNS Japan Modelers Website from Washington, DC, near to Chris' home in Maryland, and members of which group counted Chris a friend.

I used to model russian railways of WW1 and revolutionary period using a couple of Bachmann locos and a Schetmash given a better motor by Red Star.  While in St Petersburg I bought a lot of Russian built coaches of the period and many wagons and brakes.  I rewheeled them and repainted them.  But the Russian Railway Society folded and all this all got put away into a cupboard while I moved to model the GNSR in HO.

If anyone is interested in purchasing my Russian stock, get in touch.
