Did Hawksworth County class 4-6-0s ever reach Portsmouth?

I'm aware from reading various publications that after nationalisation, GWR 4-6-0s of the Hall, Modified Hall and Grange classes visited Portsmouth on scheduled inter-regional services and specials.

A Castle (5050) was impounded at Fratton after fouling a platform at Fareham.

However I've never come across any instances of Hawksworth's County class locos visiting the city.

Anyone know of any such instances?

Not so far east as the Fratton incident, but there is published photographic evidence of a Castle on-shed at Bournemouth, despite being prohibited.

I understand that, because it hadn't hit anything coming down, it was worked back light engine to Basingstoke overnight, over exactly the same route, so wrong line, and possibly tender first..............

When I was looking for strange workings c1960 a while ago I didn't find any mention of a County at Portsmouth but 1011 did get to Souithampton Docks.

'Counties' were not permitted to Portsmouth.  The deal breaker was no doubt the fact that they were wider over the steps than other GWR 2 cylinder 4-6-0s thus they were only allowed between Yeovil Town and Yeovil Jcn if they had cutback footsteps.

I suppose there were written Western Region guidelines on which locos were permitted to run on the Southern Region including any applicable restrictions.

Thanks for the definitive answer.

The restrictions will be found in the relevant Section Appendix, if you can get hold of one, along with permitted loadings and timings.  But they should come with a warning; they are so full of fascinating detail that you might not get much modelling done!

Yes but the source documents changed over the years!  Thus you need to know the period you're interested in to find the correct source document.

I own a re-named and re-numbered Hornby County 1028 County of Warwick with double chimney - I don't know when its double chimney was fitted (sometime between 1956-59), but modelled from that time until its withdrawal.

NB I don't know if it was one of the class with cutback footsteps.

Hi guys,

Hope this helps but I've just been updating some notes on liveries for those boxy things...ok, and my list of preserved stuff....

Anyway, whilst going through the February 1997 issue of "The Railway Magazine" I found the following caption to a photo "1000...away from Salisbury with a Portsmouth-Cardiff service on July 27th 1956".  The photographer is quoted as A.C.V. Kendall.

Jonathan H.

PS Photo is b&w and it looks like 1000 has a single chimney...

Oops just read the article and the comments about 1028 above - the article says that only 1017/19/21/25/29 were left with single chimneys by 2/59.  Also according to the article - must read these before posting...1000 was painted green in 7/56 - again there is a pic

Apologies,

Jonathan
