urprised to see Lostcok Hall got a TOPS code.

I see it cesaed to have an allocation in April 1972, but when did it close fully??

The Locomotive Depot is recorded as Closed in August 1968. I wonder if the Depot changed to a Stabling Point hence the reference to Tops Code:- LH

The shed closed on 4/8/68 and soon became derelict - I'm pretty sure nothing was stabled there after closure.  If there was a stabling point after this date I don;t think it was on the same site. Happy, as always, to be proved wrong though!

well the shed by shed books report that the depot still had an allocation of Class 08s until 1972 and the Engine shed directory make mention of it being used after closure to steam...........

Visited Lostock Hall 23.5.71

My records have locos stabled as 207, 421, 1749, 1964, 2861, 2863, 3410, 3412, 3531, 5291, 7549, 7673, 7677 - although those 02s were withdrawn Dec 69 and Locoshed database has D2861 as already cut up by that date....

Hmmmm!!!

I travelled on a Cardiff - Blackpool 'Illuminations Special' in October 1972.

.

We doubled back to Preston for the afternoon, and took a bus to do the stabling point at Lostock Hall.

.

There we saw a Cl.25 which had passed through Preston a short time earlier, and 3x Cl.47s, which had brought the three specials up from South Wales to Blackpool.

.

The term 'gutted' had yet to become popular in 1972 !!

They were stabled in the open air, (IIRC) in what had been the shed yard.

.

I have the details of the locos, and the exact date at home, if you're interested ?

.

Still have most of my notes, from about 1970 - but in later years I went in fits and starts.

.

Sadly my interest has waned since the 'turn of the century'

Haven't 'bunked' a shed since 2003, and that was a 2'0" gauge sugar cane railway at Gordonvale, Cairns Qld.

After it closed as a stabling point it was used as a wagon repair shop, until final closure, a lengthy period of increasing dereliction and eventual demolition. The location of the pits are still to be seen marked out by being filled in with rubble. Members of the L&YRS visited the site last summer on the 2017 'Lanky Day Out' covering the Preston-Blackburn line.

The shed building stood into the early '70's and things were kept in it, I particularly remember the 02's mentioned by Phil in #7.

Like many of these old steam sheds it was in poor condition and parts of the roof had lost their glazing.

I seem to remember the huge concrete coaling stage remained as well for some years after the end of steam.

Phil, beyond the general period 1970 - 72, sadly not.

Lostock Hall was our local shed, about three miles from home, and so if we were passing and there looked a reasonable amount on I'd ask Dad to stop and usually they'd let us in. I wouldn't have my notebook, we'd probably been shopping in Preston or something equally dull, so numbers would be written on a cadged scrap of paper. Back home they'd be checked to my Combine, and the paper discarded. Pathetic I know with hindsight, but back then they were usually just the regular dreary 25's and 40's allocated in the Northwest that we saw everyday, and so....!

Funnily enough I do have a clear memory to this day of D348 outside in the afternoon sun, a Northeastern loco it was a cop and an unusual visitor. I do also remember the 02's in a line inside the shed on a rainy day, with the rain coming in through the roof, as they too were unusual, and probably withdrawn at the time.

What would the 02’s have been used for round Lostock Hall ?

They were first introduced to Lostock Hall as a direct replacement for the LMS Kitson 0-4-0STs Nos. 47002/47008 which were used to shunt Greenbank Sidings north of Preston on the Lancaster line. The extremely tight curves in the sidings precluded the use of other types of loco.

There's also evidence that they shunted the East Lancashire side yard at Butler Street. This is D2863 on the headshunt overlooking Avenham Park 924%20D2863%20120864%201000%20Preston%20

Just like the Kitsons they replaced only one 02 was needed at Greenbank siding, the second one was a spare for 'cover' when the other failed.  The second usually acted as depot pilot. In order to get to Greenbank, again like the Kitsons, because they were too short to reliably set the track detection systems they travelled with another loco, for the Kitsons it was usually a Jinty and I have seen pics of the 02's with Jinties, 08s and a WD during transfer movements.
