Windows 10, Microsoft Edge, Posting problems

Recommended Posts

Hello,

On my new computer I cannot use spaces in posting message content.  Space works fine in topic title but once I hit the main body box to type my message, space simply does not work.

If I go to "preview post" as I have done here I can then type the message I want, formattedjustthewayIlikeit, and all is well.

I note I only have 2016 and mobile themes available so I can't try that trick.

Am I alone in this, is it a known problem, or is everyone simply not using Edge?

I've had this on Edge too, but have found an easy fix:

Open up the "Reply to this topic" screen.

Click on the "Font" change box, a drop down list appears, ignore this.

Click on the "Font" box again, the list then disappears.

Click on the white window, the cursor starts blinking, type away!

You can work round this problem in Microsoft Edge as follows when starting a reply:

1. type any character.

2. press CTRL+Z to delete it.

3. start typing your reply.

The posting editor on RMweb is actually a free open-source component called CK Editor: https://ckeditor.com/

Just use one of the many other browsers.

One thing that really annoys me with a number of other websites is when they refuse to work on IE or Edge, because the programmers choose to block their use rather than for any real technical reason or they write sloppy code which doesn't work properly everywhere (I write websites using Notepad... that works pretty much everywhere).  RMWeb always used to be one of those that worked regardless but now I have been forced into Windows 10 I don't want to end up with half a dozen browsers installed and trying to remember which I need to use for each site.  The internet is one internet and therefore any modern browser should work on any website on any PC that is kept up to date.

I agree entirely but from early days on RMWeb and yes I know Andy has changed servers on more than one occasion it worked better with a browser other than IE.  I really cannot be messing about with pressing this button and that button just to get the words to be typed properly so if it doesn't work I will use something that does.

I have little doubt that in time Edge will work correctly but it isn't at the moment so I will use something that works.  It is the same with the Mail programme with Windows 10.  It will pick up one of my email addresses but not a different one and no matter what I try it doesn't work.

Having said all of that on the whole I find Windows 10 to be far better than 8.  I would have stayed with 7 but then sooner or later support for that will end so go with the flow.

I'm going to ruffle a few feathers here, but so what...

I used to be an XP fan. Though we had Win 7 at work, and later versions were at hand for me on my (adult) kids' devices, I actually detested (yes that strongly) them. I stuck with XP on both the desktop and small laptop. I still have that, now rebuilt with the aid of a scrap one (it was quite battered). The laptop is retained due to the use of lpg programming software for my car. However, whilst it was damaged (useable but really a pain due to the damage) I purchased a new small laptop with Win 7 installed. (Just to digress slightly, I do not like using laptops, can't do as much with them as my my desktop does, but the XP one was then known as a notebook, and the Win 7 one is the same size so useful to carry when I need to).

Anyway, back to the new notebook. Came with Win 7 Pro, before I actually used it I gained the free upgrade to Win 10. I found it rather Win 7-ish but with better feature and progressed well with it. So well that I bought a cheap Win7 disc off Ebay, and free upgraded the desktop as well! I like it and Windows Edge - I've tried alternatives through the years but prefer to stick with the originals. I can't be bothered with things like Firefox (used it at work and detested that too), Chrome, or anything else. And Mac - don't use words like that near me. If Microsoft design Windows, and most software is made for Windows, then that is the best combination for me. If Microsoft design programs (not "apps" please) their 1st concern is to make them run with Wndows, so that's good for me too. And I don't want to told to change things to XYZ, I like it as it is. Funnily enough, I get very few problems either (unlike some who post on here), and when I do they eventually come clean.

This is nothing to do with Windows10 or which browser or RMweb.

It is a bug in the CK Editor as implemented in the IPB forum software. It will probably get fixed in the next software update when Andy Y installs it. Very likely to be replaced with several new ones.

As alluded too in your earlier posts Martin and as you say will be fixed in due course.  However in the meantime I am not bothering faffing about with Edge as I have used Firefox for years and am happy with it.

Oh and Stuart no feathers ruffled here.  You use what you want and what you are happy with and I will do the same for me.

Can't happen soon enough. I'm unable to get onto RMWeb using Firefox (top log on buttons don't work), so I use Safari. No biggie, of course, just laziness on my part!

If I have to use Windows, it would be v7. I downgraded to v8, that was excruciating, and when v8.1 didn't fix things I upgraded back to v7. I have to use Window for work, and we use v10. It's not as nice (for Windows!) as v7, but it's a step in at least not quite such a wrong direction.

And, yes, I do prefer a Mac!  :sungum:

Wasn't Safari development for Windows terminated around 2012? If you're on Windows (subject of this thread) you might want to consider a different browser.
