KNP Posted February 2, 2018 Share Posted February 2, 2018 (edited) Well, it has come to pass that I am enjoying building these little diorama's as they are so quick, last one Cold! was done in 20 days, and especially after seeing a display at Steam which got the old grey cells working on the drive home. It will be loosely based on this picture but at night under gas lamp illumination. Initial thoughts are it will be viewed from the front only with sides, back and lid to get the lighting/shadows to work. Shock, horror there will be no scenery involved other than a few weeds....... The title of the CBC is a play on words as it's meant to be one of the porters referring to the arrival of more parcels and not me building another one!!!!!!.........I think This will not be quick as I have a few things to sort out on Little Muddle/railway room first but done as and when plus I need to get some materials Edited February 2, 2018 by KNP 6 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Yes, I have enough stuff kicking around in 4mm that I can use immediately even a spare goods van that I can open up. I could of course 'borrow' one off Little Muddle and then use on it afterwards........you know that might work as I have a length of siding beyond the goods shed where this could be installed........like it when you brain storm an idea. Using what ever I had kicking around this is how I propose to set it up. I quite like that set up as it fills up the area with a practical display. KNP Posted February 7, 2018 Author Share Posted February 7, 2018 Not carried out any work on diorama to date rather been waiting for bits and pieces to arrive. I think I mentioned on the main site that I am rejigging the railway room where I will be converting an underutilised wardrobe into a dedicated work area with it's own lighting and power. The doors have been removed before someone comments about shutting and locking the doors........with me in it!!!! The purpose for mentioning that is I had previously used it as a store so I've had a thorough tidy up a few days ago before starting and I was amazed at what I found stashed away for a rainy day...... First was this old Mainline ventilated van that will serve magnificently as the van at the centre of this model, I have no idea how old this is but it's in pristine condition. Then a whole box full of secondhand white metal odds and ends brought from many, many secondhand stalls at exhibitions over the years and in amongst them this kit!!!! The bag it came in had a price of £4.50 on it........rather a bargain I think as I do believe this currently retails at nearly £22. I have absolutely no idea where or when or even why I brought this at the time but luckily for me I did - more importantly I found it before I brought another one!!! Well that was the end of my fines for this diorama so I ordered some more bits from Dart Castings which arrived today A selection of Porters Not sure which two I will use or how I will alter them but the other two will then be used on Little Muddle. Two headless horses arrived......as you do? These are the Suffolk Punch breed so they should look the part. If not I can always use them to cut the grass.....!!!!....???? Why have I brought these two when three are already included in the cart (sorry Lorry?) pack. It is based on something I picked up from Mikkel's site 'The Farthing Layout' about the size of the Langley Model horses. Thanks, now I've finished my work bench area it should be all systems go...... Got your PM with pictures, thanks for those especially the side one of the cart as it answered a few questions I had. As I mentioned it wasn't till I got home that the idea of a 3rd CBC came into my mind and the design work started, so I only had that one picture of mine to go by so yours will be most useful. Agree about the pony's though I do believe there was a small very powerful breed used mainly in the mines so they could be them but after I read your website I thought....yep..he's right these are small. KNP Posted February 21, 2018 Author Share Posted February 21, 2018 (edited) As I have a prime location for the main parts of this Cakebox Challenge afterwards I decided that the van and the cart would be made first. So if the CBC didn't progress then these two items could go straight onto Little Muddle. The first up is the old Mainline Ventilated van... Separated the body from the chassis, cut out door opening and removed all couplings, unwanted mouldings etc. Being able to see into the van I realised a planked floor would be needed so using an old business card this cut to size, timber planks scribed on and then painted to look like old timber. Weathering to model started, bit more to do still and as this is a static display I don't need it to move (intentionally or unintentionally!) the axles where glued in place. New open door made of plasticard and strips of card again painted to represent wood. Body attached to chassis for these pictures. Not fitted permanently at this time as I want to add some parcels/luggage to the inside, not sure what yet so left body loose whilst I make up my mind. I accept that the chassis is a bit dated now but the body is fine and with a cart with horses concealing most of the lower part anyway not much will be seen. I use Lifecolor Wood Weathering and at the moment I don't have a how to planned. Picked up most of what I do from Military Modelling websites. Done now and undercoated. Now to research the colour of the horses and how the harness/tackle fixes to the cart!!! More work is needed but this is where we are currently More tidying up needed, weathering of chassis and details require painted but the colours look/feel right. Horse on the left as painted but the one on the right has had a black wash applied. Hooves will be painted separately once rest of horse finished and varnished! I was going to try dry brushing the next layer similar to the technique my daughter used on her War Hammer figures... There are numerous techniques out there, you just need to find one that works for your own style of painting so be prepared to experiment. The issue I would see with pre-shadowing is that the dry brushing will pick up all the wrong things hence that why I am trying a different way on these horses. They are painted first, then a black wash to get into all the crevasses, edges etc. and then I will dry brush (carefully!!!) over mostly the coat/mane to bring the colour back out. That's why I agreed with Bergmann's comment about the horse on the left looked better before as the colour was indeed closer to what I was aiming for. Time will tell, I have just black washed the second horse and redden the wheels of the cart as I thought they where to dark. I will now leave overnight for the paint to harden...... How to I fix the horses so they are attached to the cart and everything can move as one especially when the chains and reins are added. Had a think and then an idea. Rigid wire through the pole and into the side of the horse/s. Seemed a good idea but...boy....did the horses holler when drilled!!! Well it work, ideal for moving but I wouldn't want to rely on it as those horses are heavy and pole is just glued to the chassis! 3 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Currently standing on the end of one of the sidings on Little Muddle where they will be displayed once the cakebox challenge is finished. Now for the figures and some load.... The walls of the van are thick but I have a secret weapon for that..... A mini drill with a cutting wheel, then files and then another very useful tool - card nail files from Poundland.......why because you can cut them to fit the need.
