The Foxfield Railway is re-introducing its diesel gala in May of 2018. It has been over ten years since the railway last hosted a diesel gala and this year will see much of the home diesel fleet in action on passenger trains and demonstration coal trains into Foxfield Colliery.

It is anticipated that this gala will also see the introduction to traffic of ex-Shelton Steel Works Janus 0-6-0 DE 'Ludstone' which has not yet turned a wheel in anger since arriving at the railway over 15 years ago!

There is also the possibility of an appropriate 'star' guest locomotive for the gala so watch out for an announcement on this soon!

The event will also be run in conjuction with a mini beer festival hosted by the railway's own One Legged Shunter real ale bar.

(NOTE: This is a Saturday & Sunday event, it will not be on the Bank Holiday Monday)

The Foxfield diesel department have been working hard and the result is the first moves of Ruston & Hornsby 424841 0-4-0DE ('165DE') Roman under its own power for over ten years. It requires further tests and work to enable it to be available for the gala in May but it's hoped it will be joining the roster for the gala in some form.

The diesel gala is now just 2 weeks away, the timetable is being finalised and will feature a full line mineral train during the day as well as mineral trains on Foxfield Bank. First departure from Caverswall Road will be around 9am for the freight and 10am for passengers and the last train up Foxfield Bank will be around 4.15pm. There may also be Whickham rides at Caverswall Road during the day but that is dependent on repairs to the Whickam's engine.

Locos rostered are:

Thomas Hill 111C

Bagnall 3207/1961 'Leys'

Bagnall 3150/1959 'Wolstanton No.3'

Ruston & Hornsby 424841/1960

BR Class 14 D9531

Yorkshire Engine Co 0-6-0 DE Ludstone may be in action around Caverswall Road but at present has electrical issues and will not be rostered in the timetable.

Update: Ruston & Hornsby 424841/1960 failed an ftr on Saturday with the discovery of a broken spring and the decision has been made to overhaul all 4 springs. Therefore her place in the gala will be taken by Hunslet 0-6-0ST Wimblebury, a rare case of steam substituting for diesel.

Timetables and guides will be available on the day, first freight away from Caverswall Road at 9.15am and first passenger at 10am. Last train up Foxfield Bank is 15.50p. There are three BeerEx trains both evenings at 18.00, 19.00 and 20.00, top and tailed by Wolstanton No.3 and D9531.

Sneak preview for tomorrow and Sunday, D9531 has been out for it's clearance run and decided to have a go with some wagons on Foxfield Bank.... Apparently it sounds good, certainly looks it!

Made it today, well worth the 200 mile round trip. Used the bus to the colliery, too video on the bank and had a ride too. Excellent day at a friendly railway. Special thanks to the two guys running Dillhorne Junction for keeping me informed on what order trains would appear. Helpful friendly photographers too. At just £11 I thought it underpriced, would have been happy to part with £15.

Thanks to all who made the journey to attend the diesel gala, despite of the weather and beer gardens no doubt calling! The event went very well and there were enough visitors to cover the costs so the organisers are already looking at options for next year.
