These two N scale Edinburgh trams may have to be part of a smaller diorama. The nearest tram route to the proposed model is Slateford Road...

Hi - I don't know if you have heard of the Scotland Street layout that was done in 00 back in the 1970s, it appeared in the March 1977 edition of Railway Modeller.  There are some references to it here: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/2116-scotland-street-goods/  That link also references the old Edinburgh Photographs site http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/0_edin_t/0_edinburgh_transport_railways_dy_scotland_street_coal_yard.htm  which is a great source of photographs of Edinburgh transport.

Thanks Jim,

I had, and meant to post the link, so thanks for doing this in your post. I agree the Edinburgh Photographs website is a great resource. When I find any old drawings which may be of interest to folk modelling the Edinburgh railway network, I’ll try and get permission to post them here as well.

Hi Marlyn - when searching I also came across the 7mm version of Scotland Street, this also shows some photos of the older 4mm layout - http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/107026-scotland-street/page-10

I've made a initial attempt at an N Scale plan based on Merchiston Station and the milk depot. However this one is 3m long x 30cm deep, which is too big for the current space in my workshop. Will keep working on it and start drawing up plans for landscape features and buildings as well.attachicon.gifMerchiston Shelf 1.jpg

I’ve been checking out quite a few milk freight related topics here on RMWeb and looking into the possibility of splitting my idea for a Merchiston/Dalry Model into three connectable ‘cameo’ layouts. Each one could be a standalone model with a fiddle arrangement at either end or the three cameos could be connected depending on available display area. Understanding the freight handling and milk depot/creamery processes are all part of the research. Looking forward to visiting the archives in the Edinburgh City Chambers at some point to see what building plans still exist.

An ordnance survey map of Edinburgh from 1921 shows that there were once 58 railway stations in the city. That number has since been cut down to just 13.

Read more at: https://www.scotsman.com/news/transport/in-pictures-edinburgh-s-lost-railway-stations-1-4664122

I've also found some excellent online photographs of Merchiston & Polwarth, available free for personal use, and looking forward to starting modelling some of the buildings!

I was still at school in Edinburgh in 1968 when the Beeching Axe took effect and closed down the suburban lines. There was a bus strike just before the closures and every train in the city was packed to bursting. I made it home one day in the guards van from Waverley Station to Balgreen Halt - great fun!

That's the 3, Kingsknowe was the first reopening.

Thanks Jim.

As many will know, but some might not, in 1983 the RCTS Scottish Branch published a nice little paperback photo album called "Yesterday's Railway - Edinburgh", ISBN 0 9508595 0 8. I expect it's long out of print but might be available from the usual secondhand sources. There's a picture of Merchiston in 1953 taken by G M Staddon with 42269 on a short train for Lanark.

There are two Staddon photos on the EdinPhoto website, including the one you mentioned, St Enodoc.

Thanks Marlyn. I had a look at that site after reading about it here and spent far too long browsing maps and reminiscences related to the city in which I lived in the 1970s and early 1980s.

I know, it's addictive, St Enodoc! I love the old maps and look forward to posting any old images I find (with permission)!

Good luck with the Edinburgh project. Angle Park fire station is, of course, still there to be seen.

Flickr can sometimes be a good resource, e.g.

My student flat was across the road and I did have copies from the original linen plans of the fire station back then. Unfortunately I disposed of all my student projects years later!

That Kenneth G. Williamson collection is wonderful, thank you for the link. I don’t use Flickr myself and forget to check it as another resource. Just finishing two Highland Railway/LMS projects, so will probably make a start on the Edinburgh one later this summer.

So is The Diggers, but not as we know it...

I haven’t been there since the early 1970s! The whole of Fountainbridge and Dundee Street area has changed with this new Napier campus!

3DK Models have just released a creamery kit which could be kitbashed for the Edinburgh & Dumfriesshire Dairies Depot, to form part of the layout plan for Merchiston to Dalry Road. https://www.3dk.ca/product-page/oo-26-dairy-creamery-building-kit

I’ll still persevere with searching the City Archives to see if some old plans still exist.

I remember the old Dalry MPD area fairly well, as I had family living in Tollcross, and it was part of the division I worked in as a police constable. I remember viewing the shed from the Dundee Street bridge on my way to West End Division HQ in Torphichen Place for my first shift. Has anyone any ideas as to the accuracy to prototype of the Edinburgh & Dumfriesshire Dairies tank wagon models produced by Dapol? Were the chassis a stamdard ex-LMS design, and how correct was the livery they used? Unfortunately, I don't remember much about the dairy itself, as Bryson Road was not an area where I usually was on duty, although I do just about remember Merchiston Station. I also have fond memories of the 'Caley' station, as that was where I arrived in Edinburgh on my visits, before I moved to work there in the early 60's.
