S&D Headcodes.

One of the premises on Gurney Slade, is that it never fell to the rule of the Western Region. This allows me to run run diesels and DMUs. So, to have them show the correct headcodes, I will need to know some, both freight and passenger. The only ones I know of are for the Pines, the Northbound being 1M04, Southbound 1O35.

1M indicates a class 1 (ie express passenger) train terminating in the London Midland Region and 1O indicates a class 1 train terminating in the SOuthern Region. The final two digits indicate the specific train as shown in the (then) current WTT and would probably have changed with each timetable change.

IIRC these head codes went out of use in the early 1970s (as TOPS went live?).

Still in use today. Our Gloucester/Worcester/Gt Malvern to Weymouth trains are all Oscars and trains up from Southampton to these places are Mikes, train from Brighton and Weymouth are Victors. What I would like are actual headcodes of S&D trains

I would suggest that very few S&DJR trains had 'reporting numbers', as opposed to lamp 'headcodes', given the minimal number of diesel/DMU trains which actually ran on the line.

There are a few pictures of steam loco's carrying headcodes. One that is legible is the 3:40pm Bournemouth West-Bath GP  2B92.

I understand from other sources, that after about 1960, all trains would be allotted a headcode, even if this wasn't shown on the loco.

They only stopped being displayed on the loco/unit, they are still used in the WTT and in TRUST.
