Happy Days!
avonside1563
That's fabulous to see the variety, particularly the converted Manning Wardle at the end. We've often talked about an alternative gala at Foxfield using all the weird and wonderful locos such as traction engine and vertical boilered locos. Maybe one day...
Killian keane
Then there was the grand-daddy of them all (as far as I can tell) 'Rattlesnake', by I W Boulton in 1861, made out of one of lord Willoughbys ploughing engines designed by Sir Daniel Gooch
Sir Hadyn
I have a spare copy of "Traction Engine Locomotives" by Ian K Hutchinson floating around for £20 posted if anyone wants it.
RMweb Premium Dava Posted February 26, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 26, 2018 I have a spare copy of "Traction Engine Locomotives" by Ian K Hutchinson floating around for £20 posted if anyone wants it. Gosh that's expensive Sir Hadyn, try 'Archive' issue 87 for 6.75, article by Andrew Neale. Dava

MarcD
Agenoria Models were supposedly producing one before they vanished. Marc
Sir Hadyn
Gosh that's expensive Sir Hadyn, try 'Archive' issue 87 for 6.75, article by Andrew Neale. Dava Yes, that's well worth getting too - the Hutchinson book being the definitive though and the two go well together. Ok, I'll reduce to £
RMweb Premium Dava Posted February 27, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 27, 2018 I have both too, mine was £4 which was a lucky find! 'Sirapite' is my favourite TE loco, and has its own thread here, back at Garretts of Leiston: http://www.longshopmuseum.co.uk/the-story-of-sirapite/ Coincidentally its also an ex-gypsum works loco [thus the name] which is another interest of mine, and was replaced by a BE loco which resembles the NSR BE loco which Sir Hadyn will be familiar with! So multiple points of interest. Dava
Sir Hadyn
I always liked the Marshall at Pepper's lime works, Amberley. Smart little machine, whilst the Fowler works loco was a beast. My all time favourite must be Aveling 9449, as it was Grandad's old engine
rue_d_etropal
Don't suppose there are any drawings.
RMweb Premium Dava Posted February 28, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 28, 2018 Don't suppose there are any drawings. The Aveling + Porter drawings are part of the Ruston archive being digitized in Lincoln, there is a search engine but not great user interface. Barclay
Not standard gauge but there's also Samson, by Stephen Lewin, now re-created at Beamish and the subject of a gem of a book by RCL publications.

Sir Hadyn
A few years ago BRM ran an article on a garden railway where the sole steam power were converted Mamod & Wilesco traction engines to locomotives, sometime in the mid 90s I recall. I thought it was great.

Sir Hadyn
like this, i came across a web page about the build once Yes,that one looks like Roly Williams' one, using Hornby Rocket bits too. The ones in BRM were weathered and the Wilesco in particular looked ace
Sir Hadyn
How about converted Sentinel and Foden wagons? The three Foden pics are at Aycliffe quarry, three miles from where I'm typing this. We nearly did a mock up of it 20 years ago at Beamish using a Foden wagon boiler and some chaldron wheels. The Foden then got sold and is now back as a lovely 5 tonner now I'm pleased to say. A fabulous looking machine, now where's my Mamod steam wagon...?
