RMweb Gold teaky Posted June 21, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 21, 2018 I had a thought. Since you are about to slightly rework the kit... In post #2 you show the reinforcing triangles for the floor to end joints plus some extra strips to reinforce the tops of the ends. What about adding reinforcing triangles to the ends of the roof instead of reinforcing the ends with extra strips? I'm assuming that if they were only as deep as the roof then they would not adversely impact the printing process.
MikeTrice
I am going to thicken the ends at the top to avoid the infill. Unfortunately the more resin used, the greater the cost.
gr.king
Don't tell anyone but I have only lined it in cream, not blue/gold/blue as in the prototype. Sir's office, now.
MikeTrice
I have started to modify the 3D model. Note that these are for progress reporting only, they have not been uploaded to Shapeways yet:
MikeTrice
Making progress, albeit slowly. First two models revised. Need to then get trial prints made before making them available so still a few weeks away:
JaymzHatstand
This really is fascinating and impressive stuff! I've got a D&S full brake to build, but could easily be tempted by some 3D vehicles to accompany it eventually! Excellent work indeed Cheers J
manna
G'Day Folks They are very tempting.......... manna
MikeTrice
I have now made the revised models available for sale as follows: https://www.shapeways.com/product/DL7GQ92A9/gnr-dia-84-1st-6-wheel-carriage-kithttps://www.shapeways.com/product/VHCTRGFA3/gnr-dia-155-composite-6-wheel-carriage-kithttps://www.shapeways.com/product/5377ZVL22/gnr-dia-245-third-6-wheel-carriage-kithttps://www.shapeways.com/product/XQ6LZ7JJ9/gnr-dia-303-full-brake-kit The kits now include solebars with integral stepboards w-irons, axleboxes and springs, ends with integral buffers, thickened ends, torpedo vents and lamps. The Full Brake has also had the pilot holes for handrails increased in size. Unfortunately this now uses far more resin than originally and the revised price reflects that. The following images are of the mouldings before any removal of residual oil, so not the easiest to photograph.
MikeTrice
Life has definately had it in for me lately with a distinct lack of free time. I have finally had a chance to wash the latests prints in IPA and give them a quick spray with filler primer so better photographs could be taken. The full brake, now with added components: The full first: Closeup of full brake showing the additional parts. Hopefully you can also see where the new hole guides have been added to the sides to aid drilling for handrails: The fittings for the full first: Rear view of the revised ends showing they are now full thickness all the way up:
gobbler
In IPA? Seems a waste of a pint to me, or is this a cleaning agent? Cheers Scott
MikeTrice
Isopropyl Alcohol. Yes it acts as a cleaning agent and is brilliant for stipping paint as well. [Edit] Corrected. Edited July 18, 2018 by MikeTrice

MikeTrice
OK, I admit it: having to modify the Bill Bedford LSWR W-Irons is a pain. In another topic I did suggest to Bill that he might like to consider adding the distinctive GNR W-Iron to his range. His response was interesting: "I've given up designing etches, especially these small frets, but there is nothing to stop anyone else drawing up a similar arrangement for prototypes that are not included in the present range.". After thinking long and hard about this I plucked up the courage to approach Eileen's Emporium and offer to produce artwork for them for some Bill Bedford style GNR W-Irons suitable for 3'7" wheels. I did consider whether to change the springing design but in the end decided that I really could not improve of Bill's design. I based the frets on Bill's LSWR product, my preferred arrangement for these vehicles. The resulting etches are now available direct from Eileen's: https://eileensemporium.com/eileens-emporium-products/product/9108-1907-gnr-wagon-w-irons-for-3%E2%80%997%E2%80%9D-wheels-4mm/. This is what you get on the fret: They fold up to produce: Hope they prove of interest.
Guy Rixon
Excellent! Now I can build those GNR fruit-vans and have the right running-gear. Many thanks for producing these.
RMweb Premium Andy Hayter Posted October 31, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 31, 2018 (edited) Does anyone know what coloured seating covers were used in the three classes in GNR days? I have just started my build and am looking ahead. Edited October 31, 2018 by Andy Hayter
RMweb Gold JCL Posted October 31, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 31, 2018 Hi Andy, Taking the composite brake in Ingrow as a guide, if it's the same style, the first has blue seats, and the third has a red colour. Hopefully these photos will help.
MikeTrice
Interesting. The tenders mention blue for 1st class, brown/gold for 2nd class non-smoking, maroon for 2nd class smoking, green for 3rd class non-smoking and grey for third class smoking. Can anyone add any more? jwealleans
Only that green (leather) became the standard for Restaurant Cars as far as I've read. I thought red was fairly widespread for third class.
MikeTrice
I had always assumed that third class was red as well!
RMweb Gold Bucoops Posted November 1, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 1, 2018 I've seen mentioned in multiple places different colours for smoking and non-smoking but no actual colour evidence to prove it actually happened.

RMweb Premium Chas Levin Posted March 19, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 19, 2019 Hi Mike, I'm not sure if posting pictures of finished models from the kit on your own thread is the done thing, but I thought you might like to see a completed model (please excuse coarse track, couplings etc). I used the Brassmasters Cleminson Truck, partly just to see how it was to build - very easy and runs like a dream, though the very short wheelbase (20') helps of course. I can live with the loss of underframe detail (whcih is partly hidden by the low double stepboards) for the nice running - many thanks for producing these great kits! 15
MikeTrice
No objections whatsoever. Beautifully built and finished - well done.
