twoscoops
Hi all I have bought a cheap DCC Midlands Compound that was cheap due to the fact that it had very thick varnish applied to it...not sure why but I would like to remove it. I have tried Humbol paint thinners to no effect. Does anyone else have suggestions to help me to remove it?? Thanks in advance. Tim
Karhedron
Depends on the type of varnish but Biostrip 20 might be worth a go. It has the advantage of being safe for plastics. May well remove the underlying paint too if that is a concern.

Will try to get the varnish off only but fully expecting to have to knock it back to basic plastic and then paint it.

Be careful of that Biostrip, it can ruin plastic models, it wrecked my Bachmann class 150 dmu bodies despite claiming its safe to use on plastic. Best way is to buy ipa alcohol on Ebay and add 10 % tap water to the ipa that activates the stripping, you will end up with a clean plastic body.
brianusa
Way back when Hornby made O gauge toys, they were varnished for whatever reason. Over the years, this turned a browny sheen which could be tolerated but when the varnish begins to come away the wagon looks a bit of a mess. The original paint looks to be OK underneath so is there any way of gently removing the old varnish without disturbing the finish and transfers beneath? Brian. Biostrip destroyed my Replica BG and it didn't even remove the paint. I'd avoid it on plastic models at all costs.
