Wagonsworth - 1963 BR/industrial shunting plank

Hello everyone

for a long time I've wanted to build a shunting layout, and now I am! its a private yard with BR running rights, (with rule 1 being applied) the reason for this so I can run my small collection of BR wagons (and my USA tank and other BR locos) and some industrial locos. it's set in the 1960's in OO gauge. it doesn't really have a fixed location.

so this is the trackplan. it is 3ft (L) x 1ft (W) and will be DCC. I need to sort out the fiddleyard. (and obviously lay the track)

I hope to get the track laid and the baseboard strengthened in the next few weeks.

One thing I heard about having a point coming at an angle form the fiddleyard, is that it would be a pain to build the fiddleyard. I decided to have a rethink.

This was my first idea. I was then advised by BlueLightning that it would be impossible to join the fiddleyard to the main layout, so I put the 3 way point on the main layout.

Those coupling ramps won't be used, I only used them for the mockup.

For what it is worth , I think your first plan is dead sexy!!

The line comes in at a cool angle and the track plan is interesting. I know I'd like to play trains on this layout!

I would suggest you get the woodwork right with the fiddleyard before you carry on laying track.

The points are set track?

You would be surprised what will run through these points so long as the pickups are sorted and the wheels are clean.

I have settrack points on my low level industrial bit.

I'll run a High Level Armstrong Whitworth diesel. Compensated but with Gibson wheels. The Lewin engine I have put in another post. OK, she has a tender with extra pickups but she runs OK.

You can put thin Plasticard in the frog to smooth things out, it does work!

The current Hornby stuff and the Hattons Barclay has no problem with my Settrack points.

Nice layout, keep up the good work.

                        Chris.

So while not much is happening on the layout, I thought I'd talk about the loco fleet. In no particular order here it is:

Bachmann USA tank, Number 30067 with BR late crest.

Hattons Andrew Barclay, Coronation in lined green.

Fireless locomotive, based on no real prototype, but because it was originally going to be based on an Andrew Barclay locomotive, but doesn't actually look anything like one, its an Bandrew Arclay. (Build thread is here http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/130221-bodging-a-fireless-loco/)

Hornby peckett, leaf green number 560. on pre order.

Cabless loco, as seen here (http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/128604-lukes-bodging-a-cabless-pug/?p=3146035)

Hornby sentinel, awaiting repaint.

I've also got planned:

BR green Hornby 06 with late crest.

BR black Hornby 101 with late crest.

Outside cylinder Hornby 0-4-0 side tank.

Hornby 06 on a Hornby terrier chassis. Thanks to Gary (BlueLightning) for the idea. (but he copied it from a book)

Outside framed Hornby 06 or Hornby bagnall (using Turbosnail's 3D printed chassis)

TS01, a 3D printed loco by Turbosnail, Named Maunsell after the designer who could've designed it.

fantastic set up! I should think it will give you many hours of pleasure both in construction & operation.

how long including couplers is the USA tank please?

The USA tank is roughly 13cm including couplers. Hope this helps.

One of the things I plan to do is have a warehouse with a siding in it, But I would need to have a way of me knowing that there something in there. I have thought about doing it mechanically with a lever at the end of the siding that when a wagon knocks into it, something comes up on the control panel,(I'm not quite sure what would) or I could do it electronically with something like a sensor between the rails, that when a wagons passes over it an LED lights up on the control panel. the easiest way of doing it is to have a 3 wall warehouse, so I can physically see when something is in there. Thats what I have come up with so far, and nothing has been set in stone yet. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Lot of potential here; interesting topic.  I run a BLT with Peco small and medium radius turnouts on the scenic section, insulfrog throughout with a very long dead frog on a curved turnout in the fiddle yard.  Wiring is as simple as possible; the current simply goes where the road is set.  I have no problems at all with running at very slow speeds with 0-6-0s, some of which are 0-4-0s in terms of pickups anyway; just make sure your track is laid level and the joins are laid smooth and I do not foresee any stalling problems with 0-4-0s on your layout.  A few minutes extra work tracklaying will yield bonus for years!

Before I started this thread, I posted a thread on trackplans, to see if anyone had any other ideas for trackplans.

Recently, in that thread, someone came up with this:

index.php?app=core&module=attach&section
The trackplan will be changed to this, and I will use the trackplan I was going to use for something else.

Progress on the layout has currently stalled because I have no idea what trackplan I'll have, I've come up with differnt ideas but can't decide on one (there is a thread for trackplans for this layout here  http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/130228-trackplans-for-a-3ft-l-x-1ft-w-oo-gauge-shunting-layout/&do=findComment&comment=3229705) any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
