Ferodo bridges

Now you mention it, I'm sure there was one for Johnnie Walker/Red Hackle in Glasgow. Damned if I can think where though. Probable drove under it with Dad when he was away to Rattray's for some bits to fix the A40!

Compressor's, even more random than brake linings!

When I was a kid i thought ferodo was those fredo frog chocolate bars of the early 70s!

Don't be daft, man; everybody knows he was a character in Lord of the Rings... ;-)

There was a bridge over the A6 on the Dunstable branch that had an advert for a long defunct ford dealer on one side and local newspaper on the other, think it went a few years ago during busway conversion!

I wonder if this is where Ferodo got their inspiration from?

It is of course one of Jack Nelson's dioramas.

Large block lettering in white. Very simple and because they used lead paint, it lasted forever.

One of the bridges over Stafford Rd, Wolverhampton still advertises Strykers, a tenpin bowling and snooker club that closed down several years ago and has since been burnt to the ground.

Even more arcane, it wasn't even the compressors themselves, but the reducing valves for them.

In Robert Hendry's book, 'British Railways' Goods Wagons in Colour', there is a view of one side girder from a 'Feredo' bridge, loaded on a 60' rail wagon, being taken for scrap. It was one from the Leicester area, I believe.

Here's one, advertising a local beer,  on Windsor Road, Penarth, which is still there:- https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.4425685,-3.1838431,3a,60y,270h,90t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sPSdMR_LXELp6mbSRmoRQ4A!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en

Hi

Fourth image down in this post

http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/85326-dave-fs-photos-ongoing-more-added-5th-march/?p=1561024

shows the bridge that used to carry the avoiding line over Lincoln High Street with the Ruston Bucyrus advert.

Cheers

Paul

Just in case a passing motorist fancied swapping his Anglia for a drag line!

The only one I remember, for sure, was on the North Circular in London, which I drove under for many years - https://shopfrontelegy.wordpress.com/2014/12/20/ferodo-bridge-stonebridge/

But I am sure there was one at Hornsey or Harringay. at perhaps at Barnet. I suggest you google "ferodo bridges" and wade through the hundreds of entries?

The one over the North Circular at Stonebridge Park is still there. Will be driving under it on Sunday

I think the Ipswich one is still there.

If my memory serves me right Albert bridge under Middlesbrough station was also one.

It seems odd now that a brake company would go to such lengths to advertise to the general public.

Most people nowadays wouldn't have a clue who made brakes or other automotive components

If that were true, there would be hardly any ads on TV. Most ads are there to make people remember the brand, not as an incentive to DIY.

Ferodo are of course still in business and sell around the world. The biggest change is that the product range no longer contains asbestos.

But there aren't adverts for automotive components on TV anymore

"Fond" memories of those Unipart TV ads from the early '80s. "The answer is yes, now what's the question?". Which, of course, prompted the British Sports Car Centre on the Goldhawk Road to counter with the slogan "Where do you go when the answer is no?".

Unipart clinicked their various slogans from that era with BL staff gatherings. I think one produced gales of laughter and was not used. “Can you fit a coil to a Princess?” struck a particular note in the era of media frenzy over Di and Fergie.

IIRC at one time there were a number of 'Brains' bridges in South Wales?

A selection from Leicester- Bridge 368 on Blackbird Road with an ad for local car dealers H.A. Hamshaw- that one survived at least into the late 70s/early 80s, I definitely remember seeing it when I was a kid, but advert and bridge are now both long gone

Car dealers advertising on bridges seems to have been a reasonably common theme in Leicester, here's another- H.A. Browett & Co on a bridge in Humberstone Lane...

There seem to be some fairly common themes coming out here- the motor trade and automotive products, engineering and breweries...

Maybe my memory is wrong, in that case - and there was not one with Ferodo on in Leicester.

I'm sure there was one just south of Leicester Central where the GC passed over Braunstone Gate, but that might just be my dodgy memory; and that bridge has long been removed anyway.

Maybe my memory is wrong, in that case - and there was not one with Ferodo on in Leicester.

I don't know whether I remember a Ferodo, but I woudn't definitely say no - I don't remember some of the Leicester selection I posted, but have vague memories that suggest there were more than these... Leicester certainly wasn't short of railway bridges, especially along the GC route, so there was plenty of scope!

Another one- 'India Tyres' over West Bridge Street

http://www.gcrleicester.info/html/west_bridge.html

The 'Hamshaws' one over Blackbird Road lasted to 1979 according to the demolition pics on this link

Is it my imagination, or can I just about see 'FERODO BRAKE SHOES' on this bridge in Bridgend, South Wales?

https://www.google.com/maps/@51.4952507,-3.5724255,3a,75y,304.59h,86.96t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s3HUOm1mt8j00mW-nHPdHdw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

Hi I read that as 'Ferodo Brake Linings'. Makes sense as that covers most brake friction materials- shoes, pads etc. And yes I do all my own car maintenance!

Regards

Chris

How many cars used pads - implying disc brakes - in the era when these signs were being painted?
