For those interested, the Sherman Tanks that had been coming soon are now in stores.  I know this is of interest for some who purchased both Oxford and Hattons Warwells.

Shermans were loaded on warwells not warflats. Warwells were constucted to carrry Sherman family vehicles as they were out of gauge on existing wagons (warflats, rectanks)

Yes, yes, yes.  I've edited my post.  It was early in the morning and I was lacking coffee when I typed it.

Got a MkIII today. 1942 10th Armoured division. Early style mantlet and nose, maybe too early for Warwells as the MkIIIs were shipped directly to the desert and eventually made their way to Italy.

 

The MkIII was the only Sherman to use a diesel engine.

 

Some additional painting is required. Tracks should be steel colour and not black. The Machine guns should be gun metal and not desert yellow. Tyres are should be painted black, vision slits a dark blue, lights their respective colours.

The new Sherman MkIII is exactly the same Sherman supplied with their Warwells. No difference except for colour, the big brown box on the rear deck and the Browning 50 calibre fitted to the commanders hatch.

I've been debating getting a desert sand Austerity because I thought they looked a bit toy like but those warwells look quite good behind yours!

The first Warwell with Sherman is practically sold out. The second run is not released.

 

The Sherman in desert sand is a lone tank (no Warwell) and came out last week.

The 50 cal Browning and 30 cal hull MGs were not fitted as supplied, so Warwells picking up a delivery of new Shermans from the harbour won't have had ammo, machine guns and maybe radios etc fitted. The Warwell tank has all 3 fitted.

 

Those in field may or may not carry the 50 cal depending on how the crews felt and equally based on supply of the guns/ammo concerned. The ammo would take up the same space as 30 cal bullets, indeed I,ve seen picks with 30cal replacing the 50 cal. The hull guns were always carried unless removed for repair or cleaning (no one is going to willing go into a battle with a hole in front instead of an MG - they are vital protection for the tank itself from loose enemy infantry).

You will find photos of the tanks with or without them in UK service.

 

Likewise the 50cal could temp tank commanders to poke their heads out of the hatch to use it - more commanders lost their lives to sniper bullets than anything else.
