DoctorP
Here are some pics of my first effort at bench building. I am new to the hobby at age 68 after years of restoring vintage tractors which arthritis will not allow me to continue. I am ultra excited about model trains and am anxious to learn all I can about every facet of this fascinating hobby. I have never been to England but my ancestors are from Perth, Scotland and my wife's ancestors (Connelley) are from Ireland. We hope one day to visit when I retire in a year or so. I am professor of philosophy and religion at a small, Kentucky college near our home. Well, here are the pics. Please feel free to make any and all comments. I hope to overlay this bench with a 1" layer of extruded foam board and then begin to construct the topography using foam and plaster. I have no clue about the best track design...need a lot of help! Theakerr
Are you aware of the British Railway Modellers of North America index.html We don't appear to have any members in Kentucky.
RMweb Premium Andy Hayter Posted March 10, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 10, 2018 (edited) Welcome DoctorP. I applaud your desire to get to know all there is to know. All I can say is that after 40+ years of study I am beginning to realise that the more I know, the more I know what I don't know. But don't let that distract you in any way. If you have any questions, just fire them off and the crew here will I am sure do their best to answer them - just don't expect all of the answers to be the same. Model railways holds a lot in common with philosophy. There can be many answers and not all of them are wrong. RMweb Premium Ian Smeeton Posted March 10, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 10, 2018 Looks nice and sturdy, but do you have particularly long arms? A 3'reach from one side only might make your arms ache a bit. Best of luck with the process. Regards Ian

I am a member of the BRMNA. In fact, their website is where I found the info on the RM site. DoctorP

RMweb Premium BR60103 Posted March 11, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 11, 2018 DoctorP: Maybe we can start talking about the philosophy of railway modelling! I'll point you to the comment in signature about the number of ways to do it. And you can ask some of us who will translate the British terms to something you can buy and make other useless suggestions. and if you have a weekend free at the end of April http://www.theplatelayers.org/gbts2018/gbts2018poster002.jpg
