Tri-ang Flying Scotsman Referb

Many, many years ago, way before Remagen, I ventured into LNER steam. In fact I still have a reasonable collection hidden away in the workshop. It all started back in 1974 when for my my 8th birthday, I was given a Triang/Hornby Flying Scotsman set with a couple of Thompson coaches. The following year I got a second tender for the Scotsman and embarked on my first conversion to turn it into the water tender. The front got cut off and the coal drilled out. A cardboard top was glued on and somehow, with the help of a soldering iron, I melted a Hornby coupling onto the front of the tender. It was of course, a complete disaster, compounded by a number of 'improvements' I made to the loco. It ran my layout for a number of years until disappearing into a box sometime around 1982, where it remained until I rediscovered it this year and became the subject of this referb.

With the current Hornby model being far superior to the old triang one, this wouldn't be about detailing the model. It's more of a nostalgic project to complete something a 9 year old me lacked the skill and knowledge to do.

After stripping the original water tender back to bare plastic, I rebuilt the front end it with parts from donor tender off eBay.

The coal tender needed less work with just stripping. but I did refitted the the 'chuff-chuff' sound box for that authentic 3 cylinder sound - who needs dcc.
The loco body took longer to strip for some reason. I think I must have repainted it with many half a dozen coats of Humbrol Apple Green paint over the years.

The big surprise with it was that it ran straight away as soon as I put power to the wheels. It's just a shame I don't have any 00 track to run it on.

With all the paint has been stripped from the loco body, I was surprised how good a condition its in. The smoke box door needed replacing as I'd wrecked it by trying to remove the BR number plate and adding a head code lamp.

Here's a closer shot of the water tender. its a relatively easy conversion, nothing more then the rear end and buffer beam from a donor tender trimmed to fit the front end of the water tender. The cover 0.75mm plasticard that's been warmed up to get the curve, then glued in place.

With loco tender bodies completely stripped its time to add a couple coats of Doncaster Green paint. In the past I've used Precision Paints, but they didn't have the spray in stock, so I ended up ordering RailMatch Doncaster Green. Pretty happy with it. Colour match is good.

Almost up to date.

Black body work and handrails are painted on loco and tenders. It's starting to look pretty good. Lining is the next job. The original Triang models were only lined in white. I intend to copy this, just not too sure how steady my hand is.

This evening I started tackling the lining and numbering.

The loco has been lined out in white as per the original Triang model. I've still to do the tenders. However, then tenders are numbered and lettered. I'll be honest, it's a lot more difficult to get it all lined up then I remember.

What I need next is the LNER coat of Arms for the cab sides.

Almost done on the refurb.

The tenders are lined. Only job left to do is the cost of arms on the cab side.

I'm pretty pleased with it. Just wish I had some track to run it on.

Very impressive work there sir.

I like what you have done to create the water carrier tender.

I have been trying to create a twin tender A3/A4 for years but can never seem to gather the parts needed for the 2nd tender.

I  mentioned the A4 given that 60019 Bittern has towed 2 tenders within the last few years.

I believe the one Bittern has been using is the same tender used by Scotsman.

I was hoping to pick up the LNER Coat of Arms decals from Ally Pally, but had no luck finding any. Looks like I'll have to order a set from Fox Transfers.

What I did though was a set of headcode lamps and 'Yorkshire Pullman' headboard. Now fitted and looking pretty good.
