Mark 1 F/O or RFO

I highly recommend "British Railways Mk1 Coaches" by Keith Parkin.

It is the bible on the Mk1.

Diagram 36 is the RFO and Diagram 71 is the original FO, which used the same pattern body.

A regular FO was Diagram 73, your number (3003) is Diagram 72 according to the book.

All have 42 seats.

Externally Diagram 36 / 72 look the same, doors at either end, but no central door,  7 evenly spaced windows with a toilet at either end.

Internally the RFO tables are 4+2 with curved tables and chairs at an angle to the table curve.

The non-prod FOs have the same internal layout but rectangular tables and fixed position seating.

These are modelled by Bachmann as the RFO (number 1 - 11) , and the first non-production FOs 3000-3002, however the FO has incorrectly got the RFO table/seat layout.

The Diagram 72 FO was also a non production FO number 3003-3019 This has not been modelled by anyone ready to run AFAIK.

The difference between 72/73 and 36/72 is the central door, but 72 has a narrow (1/2 size of a toilet - like a suburban coach) window either side of the central door.

Internally the upholstered seats look bigger than a diagram 73, and as a result has 1 less table, the central door opens directly to seats either side of it (like suburban stock) which is where a table would be.

I defer to experts other than me, But maybe an approach would be to take a current Replica FO as a base, and a Mk1 Suburban from Bachmann, cut out the 4th full sized window & central door  (leaving 3 full size windows either side from either ends) and cut out a MK1 suburban door including a small window either side of the same width as the cut in the Replica FO. Dont forget to move the footboard for the door.

For interior I didnt see any pictures in the book, but the original FOs were pretty much open partition between Smoking and non-smoking, the production ones had a full sized partition and some with doors. At a minimum use the Replica FO interior and remove the table where the door now opens.

Not sure I would use a Hornby FO as it is a slightly different shape, similarly the Bachmann RFO/FO has the wrong interior for this diagram.

Can anyone tell me what the difference was between  a  Mark 1 F/O  or RFO, both internally and externally. I am particularly interested in Coach E3003 which I believe was a 1954 build as an F/O.

Thanks in advance.

Steve,

this is  posted in" Uk Prototype questions" as well after I realised my mistake.  However I couldn't  remember how to erase a topic.

Kind Regards,Derek.

Question for original poster. How did you progress this modification?

The reason I ask is that I recently bought a Bachmann 39-240 expecting it to have fixed seat interior but it has the simulated loose table and chair interior. Basically an RFO without the Restaurant Car branding. It has a smooth roof without oversize weld seams.

i shall keep it and source a fixed seat moulding from somewhere to cut and shut to suit its running number M3001.

The diagram 72 version with centre door and narrow windows is interesting so I may get another 39-240 to make one of the M3003-M3019 series using parts from a non-gangway coach. There is a Bachmann sale on so some 39-240 FO may be cheaper than usual. I paid £30.95 including P&P. Has anyone seen any going cheaper?
