Bachmann Class 117

Certainly knocks the old Lima into a cocked hat, and one hopes that at least this time around a proper formation with a DMSO will turn up!  Loving the speedo cable, which will perhaps limit the ability of the model through setrack curves.  Where are the marker lights?  It may be the lighting, but the driver's handrail looks a touch overscale, but I am sort of assuming I am wrong if only because everything else looks so right!

I am disappointed that another 117 is being produced, though, as I would have preferred to have seen a 116.  I admit to a South Wales bias, but the 116s were much more widespread and numerous than 117/8 for most of their lives.  An alternative centre trailer and snap-on fronts would enable all 3 classes to be available...

It might be we're looking at the test model for the early green condition. When built they had no marker lights.

Looking forward to this.

Correct Mark.  No marker lights as built "Johnster".

I would also prefer the class 116, but I am not sure whether it was decided that the Derby versions would appear.

Mind you I wouldn't be surprised if Dapol pulled the 116 out of the hat based on their 122.

Don't forget - EPs are often hybrids of several variants and may not relate to any single time/condition/catalogue number.

I couldn't find a dedicated thread for this, but seen at Alexandra Palace today. Not my scale (although I hope it passes through the shrink ray!) but I was mightily impressed with the under frame detail on this first EP:

Did you happen to notice how obtrusive, or otherwise, the mechanism was?  I prefer the passenger saloon of my dmus not to be full of mechanism.  Bachmann have a history of a cast lump encroaching on the seating area and the Dapol GWR railcar could do without the unexploded bomb in the middle of the saloon.

Yes, I know I was at Ally Pally yesterday but it never occurred to me that there would be anything interesting on the Bachmann stand.  First time for everything, I guess ... :jester:

Hi,

Its even got the dummy transmission shafts.

Will this one have the low profile motor mechanism in it - if so will it be in the centre car?.

If it is in the centre car then it wont be possible to model the DMB twin that reportedly LIMA came across when they were measuring up the class 117.

Regards

Nick

No cast lump in this one! Didn't notice the mechanism in any of the 3 cars at all.

It may just be an early shot of the body without a mechanism. Were there any gaps in the seating where you wouldn’t expect one? Edited by brushman47544

Nope, all the seating appeared present & correct.

That is sheer beauty! It looks so right in every respect. The mechanism should be hidden in the way it is in the Realtrack class 156, where you can hardly see where it is. From the class 117 photo's there is no sign of it, and I think we are in for the best 1st generation DMU ever made! I will certainly add one to my fleet when it is eventually released. Note that the guard irons on the leading bogie under the driver's cab are etchings, no over thick plastic there.

Regards,

Rob.

How did I manage to miss this when I was at the show yesterday!  Too busy looking at other things or chatting to people.

I'd prefer a 116 too. There were far more of them. Still, I won't say no to a 117 although I suspect I shall have to wait a while for them to do the two liveries I would like most, ie blue and green with yellow panels.

Not sure about the buffers though.

The speedo cable might be better if it was made of a cotton based thread or flexible wire, rather than rigid plastic, it was hard enough with the 5mt’s not breaking them when removing the bodies, this may need to be separate fit for use on layouts with curves otherwise.

Underframe detail looks fantastic though.

Aren’t the new dmus supposed to have a new low profile motor which means there’s no motor intruding . That’s the reason for the delay in the 158, that it’s apparently got the new chassis they were developing for the 117. Like most folk posting here I would have preferred a 116. When Kernow announced it it was a 117/116 , but since Bachmann took over there’s been no mention. I’m hoping Dapol might take up the gauntlet.

Has the RRP been announced on it yet?

Yes if you remortgage your 5 bedroom detached home in the South East it would just about pay for one of the units, if you want to run multiple working you might need to sign up to an appropriate workhouse.

This was indeed first shots of the tooling rather than a fully fitted out 1st EP.

Mechanism is low profile as per the Realtrack 156 so no internal intrusion apart from a slightly raised floor. 1st shots of the Class 158 aren't far away either.

The buffers look OK - they are the 'cut' type used on a lot of the Pressed Steels in the early days. The Dapol 121/122 has a flexible plastic speedo cable and it's fine. If the body splits from the under frame in the same way, you don't need to disconnect it. (CJL)
