detheridge
Malcolm Savage - the pioneer of a revived 5.5mm scale- passed away on March 19th.Malcolm’s modelling will be well known to readers through his articles on his two pivotal layouts, Gwynant Valley (RM Oct 84) and Llugwy Valley (RM May 1995), which singlehandedly re-established 5.5mm scale (originally developed by George Mellor in 1963) as a credible approach once again in narrow gauge modelling. As a result of interest in his articles on his modelling, he founded the 5.5mm Association in the late 80s. Working with Roy Dock at Gem, they produced in 190 a limited re-run of Gem’s original kit for ‘Linda’. In 1996 Malcolm purchased the 5.5mm masters from Gem, which were updated and relaunched. Malcolm subsequently developed a range of new kits for 5.5mm scale. In addition to working in 5.5mm, he also developed chassis components (in conjunction with FR stalwart Mike Chinery) and kits for 009, 00n3 and 7mm. His reputation for the quality and fidelity of in his products is held in the highest esteem and his models and layouts proved influential and inspirational across the narrow gauge modelling community. He was regarded not only as a modeller par excellence, but also one of the nicest people in the hobby. He was quiet and unassuming, but an authority on all aspects of railways and railway modelling.Malcolm worked in the Veterinary Pathology Department at Liverpool University. He was involved with a great number of other activities including narrow boating, vintage clock repair and the ability to fix just about anything. The hobby has lost a key figure. Without the Association that Malcolm founded, 5.5mm modellers would not know each other and without his practical support modelling in the scale would probably no longer exist. We owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude.
