kernowtim
I have recently acquired some tinplate wagons and not having any coarse scale track am thinking of rewheeling them to run on the peco track of my still unstarted layout. The LMS flat wagon is also suffering from mazac rot issues, other wagons have plastic wheels loose on axles. Are there any insulated drop in wheels suitable for this?? Thanks Tim
brianusa
The Hornby wagons appear to have plastic wheels which should suffice. The bogie truck could do with replacements but the standard plastic wheels are really too small for this wagon as can be seen by the remains of the originals. Replacement wheels can be obtained via the HRCA http://www.hrca.net/ , but you have to be a member. Brian.
Nearholmer
Assuming you are using tinplate or other Coarse-scale track, the easiest modern replacements are the plastic ones made by Progress Products. Their server seems to be down currently, so I can’t copy and paste a link, but they are discoverable via ebay. Alternatively, get a few otherwise useless old Hornby wagons with plastic wheels, and recycle the wheels from them. If you put a washer behind the wheel to make the gagging on the axle act as a proper stop, and one or two between the wheel and the W-iron, that will stop the wheels wandering about and causing derailments. To get them to run well on 0 gauge Peco track, and especially through points, you really need finescale wheels, and I think it might be possible to fit Peco or Slaters ones, by reaming the axles holes in the bogies, and soldering the brass bearings into them, but you might want to double-check axle-length with the manufacturer before splashing out on any.
