This is my first CBC which is 7x7 and will be modelled on a small coal depot near to where I lived growing up as child. The CBC will be N gauge with a back scene and a small grassed embankment infront of this will be a length of track also there will be a coal depot and staithes along with workers unloading a coal wagon. There will be plenty of weathering and scenery incorporated within the CB. I hope this sounds ok so here is a picture of the base and backboard.

Humble beginnings! But no seriously, this does remind me a bit of my third cakebox offering, "Cutting the cake" when I first started work on it, and re "Whales coal depot", the description looks interesting, and I look forward to seeing how the diorama develops.

I was confused - typo for Wales? A LNWR loco coaling facility of a design introduced by George Whale? But I've realised it must be a place name, probably somewhere in County Durham from your location... though I can't find it on the map. Looking forward to finding out!

Thank you Andrew for the interest i have had a look at other forum members CBCs all are really good and inspiring to a beginner like me. It's hard because others have got coal yard themes but at least I can make mine a tiny different from my own recollections of when I was much youger.

Anyway I have started to lay cardboard for the embankment ready for some paper mache and filler..

Hi Steve when I grew up in Crook in the County of Durham it had a large mind called Wooley pit and I can remember a coal merchant called Whales and they had their own loco which would collect the coal bring it to the merchant and then filled into sack for delivery around Crook, Billy Row and the Stanley area..

I built an N gauge layout once. Over forty years ago now - I'm not sure my eyesight is up to it now.  :)

Seriously though, good luck with this and I look forward to seeing your progress.

It sounds really interesting. Can I ask why you went for 7x7 rather than 8x8?

I had a drawer front laid about and it was 7 inches wide so I made the other side 7 inches hence 7x7 thats why I came to this size CB. Thanks for your interest..:)

Latest update on my CBC I have managed to finish the paper mache on the embankment so once this has had time to dry i will apply a mix of pollyfilla on top of the mache. My length of track should arrive tomorrow so I can plan out the rest of the CB. Picture of progress..

I have to admit that landscaping using "paper mash", and track ballasting (the actual gluing part) are my least favourite railway modelling activities, not least for the fact that the respective processes can take what seems like an eternity to dry/go off, especially if done in the winter time, as I once discovered. Therein lies a valuable lesson, always try and do these tasks in the summer, or at least in mild (ish) weather!

Still a bit of a way to go then, but I look forward to seeing the model progress further.

Thanks for your comments Andrew i don't mind making the hills with mache but I don't like the ballasting much as it can do easily to wrong but I will be posting pics of my further progress later this week..:)
