In the 'To Do' box is an M & M kits BR Brake Van.

I have been put off by etched brass, not sure why...

After looking at wagons on the Dock Green thread, I must face the challenge...

I decided to scribe the etched fold lines until I could see the knife mark through the brass, then gently fold.  One end was tried and it was not too daunting...

The kit comes with some laser cut parts to infil the etched end to beef it up to a more realistic thickness.

I really need to find the instructions...

My stand alone iron is a 25W Weller which does a good job on most things.  I also have a 50W Weller soldering station with tip temp feedback.  I built a Dragon kit with this but it was struggle to get the tip temp high enough (>400C) to get the work to the right temperature.  (You can tell because the solder gets sticky on the work and doesn't want to flow).  The kit had pretty thick brass and large areas.

Since then I got myself an 80W Weller but haven't tried it yet.

I folded the main body last night.  I have a Maplins temperature controlled iron and it was not powerful enough.  I have a higher powered iron in the workshop that hopefully will do the job.....

Hi I use a Weller 40 with a simple dimmer switch from B&Q. You have to experiment with the settings, by chance I got it about right first time just under half way around the dial. It's a lot cheaper than a temperature controlled one.

Good luck with the kit.

best Tim

  • 1 year later...

Along with N gauge activities, I am about to build a working 5" scale BR Brake/Guards, van to run at our live steam track in Wrexham. I am struggling to get any information on the under side, chassis, brake set up etc; As you can appreciate in 5" gauge it has to be fairly close to the original. Any information would be gratefully received.

John.
