RMweb Gold BlueLightning Posted May 8, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 8, 2018 Hi All, I present to you here a cakebox entry, that I built for a friend, let's start with a bit of background. Back in March me and a few friends were talking about models we would like, one of them mentioned a Neilson Box Tank, so that he could model Neil from The Railway Series, he also mentioned a scene that features Neil and Skarloey, this scene: As this friend had been very supportive at a time I needed it I offered to make him a Box Tank, I said no more than that. He reluctantly accepted when I told him I was doing it no matter what!! However I had much bigger plans that that and started work on baseboards that night! and then played with ideas of how to make the scene: An old Hornby 4 wheel carriage chassis was used for Skarloey's flatbed, this had most of it's detail removed, then an off cut from the Bluebell Railways carriage works inserted to make a new bed, and some N gauge rails stuck to the top to give Skarloey somewhere to sit, and some hooks added to the ends: With this done I started work on Neil himself, using part of the wheel set from a "Great British Locomotives" T9 Tender as these matched both in wheel base and diameter to the drawings I have: The support pillar removed from the top I was able to add a footplate: and a tank: and some cab sides: I then stared to add some details to Neil with some more parts from some "Great British Locomotives" locos, a funnel and some cylinders to start: and then some pipework to his sides, and firebox: Coupling hooks were added to the loco, and some chain cut to act as the 3 links: It was then time to add some paint, I used Phoenix Precision SE&CR Loco Green, as I have some and it seemed close enough: I made some Transfers for the lettering, and with some paint, ballast, and static grass on the layout it was looking complete, however at the time I did not have a Skarloey to pose on the layout: I did shortly after manage to buy one, which was posed on the layout for some photos: Some detail such as Neil's face and crew have been left for the new owner to fit, as well as backdating his Skarloey into 1865 condition, he has received the layout today so hopefully we can see some updates from him as and when he carries them out, this however ends my involvement with the project. Thanks for looking, hope you enjoyed, Gary

luke the train spotter
Really nicely modelled. Like that static grass, what did you use?
RMweb Gold BlueLightning Posted May 9, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 9, 2018 Thanks guys! The static grass is Gaugemaster. I think it is their Summer Blend, but I'm not 100% sure and I don't have the packet any more! Gary

RedGemAlchemist
I've always loved the story Crosspatch. Beautiful recreation of Peter and Gunvor Edwards' fantastic watercolour illustration.

009 micro modeller
Looks very nice and you've captured both the real locos Neil was based on and the original illustration very well.
