Decoder for N scale Bachmann LMS 2-6-4T

Hi folks,

I have a 3 year old N scale Bachmann LMS Fairburn 2-6-4T.  I'm starting to convert my fleet to DCC, and this is high on the list to convert.  I've done some google searches, but the search seems to ignore that "N", and everything I find is applicable to the HO/OO version of the same loco.  (and I did a search this forum and didn't get any hits, apologies if its been covered before)

I'm looking for recommendations for decoders which I can put in this engine.  I haven't had it apart yet, but upon close inspection, it looks like there's a simple 6 pin "DC chip" in the cab.  According to this Hattons link, there is a 6 pin in there.

I'm figuring any basic 6 pin decoder will be fine, but I'm wodering if anyone has experience with a specific decoder in this loco.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanx!

Mike

I'd recommend the Bachmann 36-568 decoder which is which is not only an excellent and reliable decoder but also much cheaper than most N Gauge alternatives. This decoder is a rebadged version of the Zimo MX622N, which can be had slightly cheaper than the Bachmann version from specialist DCC retailers. To simplify decoder programming I have standardised on these decoders, which fit all but the smallest N Gauge locos with 6-pin sockets.

You may find you need to search here or on the N Gauge Forum for tips on removing the body for DCC fitting. Hopefully it's simple like the Farish Standard 4MT and not a wrangle like their 3MT.

Hi

I use the Zimo MX622N in mine without issue and fitting is a breeze as well, just remove the 3 screws 1 under the front bogie and 2 at the back, body pops of then cab pops off.

Tried a few different decoders before settling on the Zimo

Lenz Silver Mini ok but pricey

Gaugemaster ran likes dog with wonky legs

Laisdcc ok but little control over slow running

Zimo super smooth slow running

The Zimo is now my standard decoder.

  • 3 weeks later...

I have one with a Gaugemaster chip in it.  No problems.

The LaisDCC is a little on the long side and also has wires leading off it for a stay-alive (or at least the three chips I have do).  I'm not sure if they will fit the space.

The only chips I steer clear of are the blue Bachmann, which seem to lose their address if a loco hits a short somewhere else on the layout (not always avoidable- derailments happen even on the best of track).

Hope this helps

Les
