RMweb Premium ColinK Posted May 9, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 9, 2018 Hi, There is only space for a small amount of landscape on my layout, however I am having problems and would appreciate any advice. To overcome the 'flat baseboard' look, I'm trying to introduce some variation in the land level. In the corner I've raised the level by gluing foam board onto the baseboard. Yesterday I tried covering this with plaster. The plaster has stuck well to the plywood baseboard top, but 24 hours later the plaster has just peeled off the foam board. I'm wondering if this is due to the type of plaster I used (Woodland Scenics Lightweight Hydrocal plaster) or is it simply that plaster does not stick to foam board? I've got some Woodland Scenics Shaper Sheet Plaster, would that work? In the past I've used ready mixed Tetrion filler which has worked well, but I've not tried it on foam board. Thanks in advance. RMweb Gold john new Posted May 9, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 9, 2018 (edited) If this is the paper/card with foam infill type of foam-board it can delaminate over time. Have had to withdraw some of the 1:1 scale photo based replica rail-tour headboards and the photo-repro 1:1 Class 66 nameplate I did for the SLS display stand because of that. I'm guessing the compound of the foam is some form of non-stick material in your case. Edited May 9, 2018 by john new
34theletterbetweenB&D
PVA bonds to foam board perfectly well. Try covering the foam board with paper attached using PVA, plasters will typically bond to paper.
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted May 9, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 9, 2018 Cut a few angled slices into the foam board a bit to rough up the surface, it gives something to grab to, and I mix a dollop of pva glue into the plaster.
RMweb Premium ColinK Posted May 10, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 10, 2018 Thanks everyone for your help and advice. This is what I’ve done... Put some small pins through the foamboard and into the baseboard underneath, leaving the heads slightly proud. The idea being that the plaster will stick to the pin heads and that the pins will help keep the foamboard together over time. Cut some troughs in the foamboard, in addition to giving a key for the plaster to grip, the glue in the plaster will get into the foamboard and hopefully stop it delaminating. Used a different plaster, this time Woodland Scenics Shaper Sheet Plaster which according to the box has some adhesive properties. Mixed some quality pva in with the plaster to help it stick. The plaster has dried and it seems to have worked, although I’m not going to try prising it off! Thanks again.
