Gas tanks on older coaches

Recommended Posts

A possible source of information would be the rather macabre photos taken of railway accidents, where the carriage has been overturned but otherwise almost intact. I found a good one of the accident at Welshampton in 1897 in the Trains in Trouble series, but I can't find a copy on-line. Probably not a lot of pipework required, but it would depend on your prototype.

Funny enough, I've been thinking about this from the opposite end of spectrum; I have been working up an old Triang 'shortie'  GW Dean clerestory which has gas tanks underneath a very crudely moulded underframe which simply attaches to the bottom of the coach and performs no real function.  The coach has an 'integrally moulded' body with the solebars included in it.  The gas cylinders are, for all I know, correct in size and dimensions, but are attached to the underframe piece with solid plastic.  I will have to get rid of this and replace them with something that looks a bit more like the original brackets, but only visible pipework will be indulged in.

Bit more research needed, methinks!

G'Day Folks

Thank you for the replies, There's not of info on the net about gas lighting on trains, old technology I suppose, so I've kinda guessed what would be underneath, until I get a better picture.

For the Gas Tanks I used a couple of bit of round metal, cut off of a tent peg, 8 mm in diameter, which I wrapped in thin plastic, they're heavy so good low down weight and a couple of bits of wire coming out, for the gas pipes.
